Value / Mfg of 1941 M1 Garand
I found advertised a 1941 M1 Garand in a paper sporting goods. I've not yet talked to the owner and want to now the "right" questions to ask first. Example:
What is the manufacturer? (Can I verify this by the serial # or other markings?)
Seller says the rifle is in "very good" condition? (I know there are ratings that organizations like Civil Marksmanship Program (CMP) use. But how do I know what the real rating of the rifle is, take it to a licensed gunsmith?)
What would be the ballpark on a rifle that is in very good visible dna operating condition?
Is it reasonable to ask for the serial # of the rifle and can I check that # online anywhere to get more history on the rifle?
Thanks in advance.

Most if not all original M1 Garands made in that year were made by Springfield Armory. On the top, back of the receiver next to the stock it should say " Springfield 30 cal. " or something to that effect. Alot of these guns are selling anywhere from $350.00- on up depending on the condition of the gun.

I'd say $350 is on the very low end of the scale as well. CMP is selling most M1s these days starting at $500 (http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm). A good place to get lots of very detailed information is www.jouster.com - enthusiasts, competitive shooters, authors, etc frequently contribute and I've learned the most about the M1 from that board. M1's are just awesome to shoot - mine was stolen and I haven't replaced it yet - while M1 market prices have climbed at least $150 average in the last 2yrs.
cheers,
