Need help choosing a youth .22 bolt action

I want to purchase a youth model .22LR for my son for christmas. He is 7 years old, and alittle small for his age. I would like to find a bolt action single shot. I liked the size and look of the Henry Mini Bolt, but you can't mount a scope on it. Please let me know about the accuracy of these guns also.

Thanks, Glenn

A guy I know bought his son a chipmunk. He claims it is the most accurate .22 he has shot. Its got a 3/8" grooved receiver for scope mounting

Passthru, I was in the exact same situation you are in. I have a 7 year old son who is average to small for his age. Two days ago I went to the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor store in Memphis, TN and bought him a Marlin Buckaroo. It's a single shot bolt action .22 that you can mount a scope on. It was $139. This will be his Christmas present from me. If you have a Bass Pro Shops store anywhere near, you should give it a look.

If I remember the little Henry comes with fiber optic sights. It maybe an idea to teach the principles of shooting iron sights at the same time you are teaching your son firearm safety and hunter ethics. Maybe when you upgrade from his first 22, that may be the time to switch to a scope. Just my thoughts

Guys, I planned on using the open sights while teaching him to shoot. Later I would put a scope on it. I really like the size of the Henry Mini Bolt. It also has good williams fiber optic sights on it. Does any one have any experience with Henry firearms.

My oldest son is 7 as well and this summer I bought a single shot bolt action 22 made by CZ for his birthday last year. I don't know the model number, but it is the only youth gun on their web site (CZ-USA). I think it was the 452 scout. The thing is a tackdriver. It is a great rifle. My 7 year old is big for his age, but my 5 year old uses it as well. I would recommend it to anybody. As opposed to the Chipmunk (which is also a nice firearm) the CZ is big enough that a kid won't outgrow it as quickly (also true for the Henry and the Marlin). I have not had experience with either the Henry or the Marlin, but I doubt that they could have much of an edge on the CZ. Any way you go, enjoy shooting it with your child. I know it has been a special experience for me.

I bought my son a marlin 15yn years ago . one of the most accurate .22 you'll shoot. looks just like a adult gun. checkering ,decent wood and real sights. i put a little tasco scope on it. now my middle son is learniong with it. i like them a lot better than the chipmunks.

Does anyone have the Henry Mini Bolt .22. If you do tell me about your thoughts on this gun.

I don't have a mini bolt but I have other henry guns and love them. I know guns and ammo recently nominated them as one of the guns of the year. Goto henryrepeating.com and read about them. If you have any questions use the "contact us" page, you will get a quick responce from the president of the company.
