Hard to beat a Remington.

Shooting a Savage is like kissing a fat girl. OK OK I just hate them because they used to chamber 223 in a long action.

My favorite varmint round is the 22.250. Buy a Savage mod 12 with a stainless bull bbl ,laminated stock, and accutrigger. GREAT shooters

Remington 700Por Ruger Target model in .223, both are great shooters.A little more expensive but worth the extra over the Savage.

I have a remington 700 bdl custom deluxe .222 and a Ruger #1 bull bbl .204...won't shoot like my Savages do...so I have to disagree

Under $400? Try a Savage or Stevens. I like the simplicity of the Stevens. They're essentially the same rifle, but the Stevens will be cheaper. Think about .243 or .223. I like the .243.

I'll second this. I have one in the varmint/target model and I LOVE it. Usually the knock on Rugers is the factory trigger, but I actually like the trigger on the target model.

My favorite is the Remington 700 VLS in 6mm. Extremely accurate and it won't break the bank.

The Savage rifles take a back seat to no-one. Don't let the price scare you. I like Remingtons very much and have Rugers as well BUT the Savage is just a darn good value.

i've shot rugers, remingtons and savages, and they all shoot great but the savage has a couple things in its favor: a lower price compared to both the ruger and remington plus it has the acutrigger so you know what kind of triger pull you'll have before the box is even open, something you can't always say about a ruger or a remington rifle. whatever you pick you must remember: the riflecan onlyprform as well as the the scope that is mounted on it.

I recommend Remingtons and Rugers over Savages everytime I get asked the question. Just a lot better overall quality. Winchesters are also alright guns.
