Is the TC Encore worth it?

I am going to buy a muzzleloader for hunting deer in iowa ,we cant use rifles to hunt deer, and my dad and i are talking about going on an elk hunt in a couple of years. He has a 300 weatherby mag which shoots nice. I am thinking about maybe getting the encore for the muzzleloader then buying a rifle barrel for the elk hunt. It would be cheaper then buying a nice rifle and after the elk hunt i dont know if i would use it for another hunt. What does everyone think about this idea? My dad has an old 8mm mauser that he sporterized but i would rather spend the money for a encore since i would be spending alot of money for the elk hunt and would hate for something to go wrong with the 8mm. What does everyone think about this idea?

I would go with a T/C Encore. Good luck.

I think you’re on the right track. The T/C should work well for your hunting needs. No sense in spending extra money on a rifle if not required once you have the T/C. Good luck...

I would buy a separate muzzle loader and rifle for the money you will spend on the TC..Just my opinion but based on retail prices and added sales tax i don't see where it is a bargain. Lets not even talk about the new PRO they are selling in the 700 dollar range.

RE: Is the TC Encore worth it?

Well, I have been down this road with encore. I am not sure I would do it again. I had a ML for a while and sold the barrel to my brother. Ok, I found a sale on 204 barrels, so I got one. I also got a walnut stock and forarm. Didn't shoot well at all. So got the forarm fitted, still not great, so had the forearm pillar bedded so no contact with barrel, little better but not great. Ok, so had the hinge pin hole milled to match the barrel pefectly and oversized pin in. Now it shoots .7MOA regularly 5 shots. But it cost me more than I planned.

Now every barrel I get I have to take to the gunsmith to have him mill out the hole to match my oversized hinge.

The hinge is the weak part of the guns design. And it needs to be real tight.

On average, they are pretty darn good shooters. As a muzzle loader, you can buy a good muzzle loader for a lot less money but when you figure everything in, it makes sense to me to go the Encore route. This said, there is nothing wrong with the 8MM and I see no reason that anything would go wrong with it.

Check out CVA. They have centerfire/muzzleloader combo guns too. I have an Optima Pro .50 cal that shoots very tight groups at 100 yds. I have lots of friends that shoot CVA's and we all love them. I shot a doe at 165 yds with mine two seasons ago. Easy to clean, good looking, and a nice price tag. CVA puts out a great product. They are offeredin variouscolors including your favorite camo patterns.Would an IA boy steer you wrong?:D http://www.cva.com/products/rifle_optelite_center.htm

The only way to go if you are going muzzle loader is Thompson Centerfire.
The Encore is the Top of the line and the last name in muzzleloaders. TC stands behind their prodocts 100% and they guarentee them for life period no matter how many owners it has. Find me another Co. that does that. Now they are not cheap!!! You may look into the price of a barrel for it and you may want to get another gun. But the one shot one kill hunt is the only way to go. Check them out at their shop at www.foxridgeoutfitters.com this is the sight for T.C.'s they get guns that no one else can special made. The shop is in the T.C. parking lot. Good Luck You getting the best of the best. Mike

I bought a stainless used frame in like new conditon with black synthetic forearm and buttstock for 255.00. Once you have that all you need to do is to buy a new barrel to have a different rifle. The stainless .50 muzzleloader barrel runs about 269.00 at most places then you need the forearm and that will be about 19.00 to 27.00. You can find the barrel cheaper at some places though. You can buy them from wholesalers and save alot of moolah. Here is a link to some good prices on barrels if you desire what they have in stock. http://pages.prodigy.net/mktcdyksman/ I have a .375 H&H Magnum barrel with a custom shop muzzle tamer installed. This as well with the sims recoil pad makes my 225 gr. max hanloads kick like a short barreled .308 winchester. This barrel is real accurate and Ive had no problems. The trigger pull is excellent and Im glad I bought the frame. I can have just about any rifle caliber you can imagne, if you are into single shots. The first shot should be the one that counts anyhow. With practice you can reload amost as fast as a bolt rifle. I saw the encore against a bolt rifle on american rifleman. With off hand steady shots the guy with the encore was actually faster on his shots when shooting at defined targets than the bolt shooter was. I think the encore is a very versatile rifle capable of handling any game on the planet and highly recommend it. They even have the .416 Rigby chambered in one of their barrels. Check out this link if you want to see some idea of the calibers you can have. http://www.matchgrademachine.com/gunshop/pages.php?pageid=21

you won't gp wrong with the encore. i love mine (300 win mag,209x50,and a 15" 45/70). last year i killed a deer at 209 yards (laser rangefinder) with a shot through the heart. i would recommend you try the tc shockwave sabots, its what i shoot and i am very pleased with accuracy, energy and performance of both gun and ammo.

I own 2 Encore muzzleloader, and the above statement is stretching it a bit. I also own 2 Knights and an Ultimate, and to say my Encores are thebest of the best, well, not even close. Encores are fine weapons, but like someone else said, they are not cheap. I personally hate their triggers and have hadMike Bellm fix all ofmine. I also tried 3 factory centerfire barrels and 2 muzzleloader barrelsand could not get an "acceptable" group. I ended up buying a Virgin Valleycenterfire barrel for the accuracy that I desired. If you do the math on what Ihave inmy Encore, I could easily justify 2 different guns. I wouldpersonally shop around and try to get two guns.

I have 2 Encores. I haven't shot any other brands and I NEVER will!!!!!!!!!! Are they perfect, maybe not. Are they the most versatile gun on the market? ABSOLUTELY!

Ditto

I must say I have shot Knight,TC and CVA's and while decent muzzleloaders were nowhere near my White Super 91. As far as results with a rifled barrel I have heard mixed results enough that I don't want to deal with one and they don't exactly give them away to boot.

There is nothing wrong with inexperience, but when it is coupled with narrow mindedness, itmakes a person appear ignorant.

It is all what a guy likes. For once a year and for one shot I have never been disapointed in my CVA. High quality and a heck of a shooter.

As always, there will be someone with a bad experience with any make of firearm. I had a terrible time with my CVA, does that mean there all junk? Others do not get good barrel to frame fit on their Encores and revert to practices that void the warranties (oversized hinge pins) to try to gain some accuracy. I went from a CVA Kodiak magnum to a T/C Encore, and the difference was phenomenal. I went from struggling with a gun that couldn't group @25 yds to a firearm that shot 1.5" groups @ 100yds the first time out on the range. IMHO, you will be well served with the Encore.

As far as Muzzle loaders go, I have had an Encore and some hunting buddies have also owned them. I have to tell you that none of them will hold a candle to a Knight Muzzle loader. The only advantage is that they have interchangeable barrels, but as was stated before, you will get alot better accuracy if you put the money into a GOOD rifle right from the start. Your 8mm should perform fine for you, so if you want to invest in a truely awesome, accurate muzzleloader, buy a Knight!
Just my 2 cents.

You can't beat going with the encore. I have 4 frames and 14 barrels, modern and muzzleloading. Everytime you want a new caliber just buy a barrel.
