Ruger 10/22 looking for advice

Well I was recently in the market for a new toy, and I almost bought an AK-47 pre ban. Well my better judgment side of me decided to go with a brand new Ruger 10/22 after the gunsmith proved how quiet CB ammo is. I can shoot that thing in my back yard without disturbing anybody, as opposed to the AK, which would probably get the sheriff called on me. I want to know what people do to these things to make them so awsome. I have looked through the midway catalog and seen all the stocks, magazines, barrells, etc.
Here is what I have:
Ruger 10/22 stainless/wood, 10 rd mag, red dot (had one laying around)
Here is what I want to use it for:
I want to be able to shoot it in the back yard without my wife knowing that im shooting anything larger than my pellet gun, and thats how it sounds with the CB shorts Im using now. Ideally I will only be shooting at 30 yards tops, unless I take it squirell hunting. But I want to customize, make it mine, you know?? Any suggestions????

i don't think ya can shoot shorts in the 10/22.. i got the same model. i put a slim polymer butler creek stock on it and a 4x bushnell scope. but ya can do way more is ya got the $$$$$......their very accurate stock. stick with factory mags; the hicap ones don't feed reliably.

You can shoot the shorts, but they dont fit in the mag, and they dont cycle the weapon. You have to manually feed them and then extract them by pulling the bolt back. I dont want to keep shooting them, the store was just out of CB longs and I didnt feel like going all the way to wallmart. And I just HAD to shoot my new gun, you know how it is.

Boy oh boy, you're askin for a long list of possible mods.
You can change everything on a 10/22... trigger groups, barrels, stocks, and everything else but the reciever itself. Well, you could even change that but then it woul dbe a different gun.

They are veryfun guns, and a serioius amount of aftermarket parts and accessories.

First thing to do: change the trigger group out, or at least the springs.
I did my own springs, added an overtravel stop, and put in a recoil buffer on th rear pin. What a difference! My groups were cut by two thirds instantly.

Oh, and after you change your particulars, try a bunch of ammo.
Some will shoot way better then others, even within the cheap end of the ammo spectrum.

Volquartsen used to and still may ofer a conversion to llow the use of .22 shorts in the 10/22. It has a reduced wt bolt and bolt handle as well as a re-designed magazine. Even if it's not shown on thier site, give 'em a call.
Another good idea is to go register at www.RimfireCentral.com and ask away. That's THE home for anything 10/22 related. if the folks there cannot help you, you're stranded.

You might wanna consider getting a suppressor.
