270 Win will make a great step up in your locale for the game at hand, congrats on moving up from the 30-30.
Personally, I'drecommend the 30-06 over either, just in case you may want to "kick the ole hunting up a notch" someday.

RE: 270's
Shot a win. featherlite in 270 and it was really nice. This weekend gonna shoot nephews Rem 700 to see which of those I like the best. Hate to put the ole 30-30 down though. Have had it since the 70's when I got out of the service. Killed many, many deer with that gun but have always hunted tight places and took close shots. Times have change with all the logging industry cutting the woods up and replanting.

Know what ya mean. For over a decade, I hunted with a 270win in 7400 and before that a 30-30. Then finally got a decent job, and got the gun bug. Now, 9 deer calibers later, the poor 270 and thirdy-thirdy collect dust. But I finally decided last year to take the 270 out for the heck of it.

My 270 WSM averages 3225 fps with the Winchester Supreme Ballistic silvertips. However My rifle has a 26 inch barrel. The 150 grain Winchester PP's averaged 3119 fps. These reading with the Pro Chrono at 25 ft from the muzzle. This is a Savage Heavy barrel Varmit model. I had to correct my first reading on the 150's as I just found my notebook where I wrote them down.

I would not be afraid to bet that the two above calibers are amoung the top three deer getters for rifles. I have probably tried at least 10 or 15 myself. I have not used the 30-30 for a number of years but it sure did the job whenever I called on it to do so. We are lucky to have so many good choices for deer and other big game. If a guy can't find something with the exact ballistics you are wishing for in todays market, He just ain't looking. I shot nine mule deer last season with the 270, however most of them could have been taken just as well with the 30-30. A few were a bit beyond my range ability to cleanly take with the 30-30.
The 270 WSM has a bit of an edge over the 270 Winchester but I would never notice it for hunting deer as I keep my shots under 300 yards and usually 200 yards is about the most common range where I hunt.

I have a remington 700 bdl in stainless that I use a 130 grain corelokt... the recoil is almost nill and i can drive tacks out to 250 yards! if you want more punch you can go with the wsm but i think the regualr old .270 is sufficient
