338 Win Mag Accuracy
 

I am looking for peoples opinions onwhich manufacturermakes the most accurate out of the box 338 winchester magnum? I realize their are many postsdiscussing the accuracy of Sakos, Savages, Remingtons, etc., but I am specifically looking for peoples experience with the 338.Thanks in advance.

I had two Savage 338's with Laminated stocks. Both were very good shooters. I didn't care for the caliber in the end but they were accurate for sure.

Well I have a older(6-8yrs) Remington 700 BDL Custom Deluxe that shoots great. .75" groups right out of the box. A friend of mine has a Weatherby MkV that shoots just over 1" groups. Neither have muzzlebrakes so keep that in mind. Last gunshow I ended up gettinga good deal on a Winchester 70 that is used with a muzzlebrake so I am looking forward to seeing how that shoots. Are you suggesting that a 338win mag can't be accurately fired without a muzzlebrake?:)

My cousin own a Browning A-Bolt in .338 Win. Mag. I loaded some Barnes 225 gr. XFB's rounds, and the rifle shoots about 2/3" three shot groups. He has killed 5 oryx with the rifle, and the above bullet. Good luck.

I own a 1980 Model 70 XTR Winchester in .338 Win. Mag that has given me excellent accuracy without being touched. It consistantly shot around 1 moa with factory 200 gr. ammo, until I could no longer purchase anymore of that particular lot number. Succeeding factory ammo of a different lot number opened the groups up somewhat, but still shoots sub-1.5 moa regularly. I feel confident that handloading will give me more precise ammo. Just haven't done it yet.

NO I was not suggesting it would bemore accurate without a muzzlebrake. I prefer my guns without muzzle brakes but I have heard stories of better and worse groups after people install a muzzlebrake. On the bench I think most people would shoot better with a brake because less recoil. Recoil of a 338winmag has never bothered me so I dont care either way. Jovan

My old man is a semi-auto buff, so he has a Browning BAR in 338. It shoots good enuf groups at 100 yards to be a hunting rifle, its by no means a tack driver, but it does alright. I haven't messed with it much but with Combined Technology BTs it shoots 3 shots into 1.5" I know if I spent a lil more time with that rifle it would probably be able to shoot 1" or less groups, and if I handloaded with it I'm sure it'd shoot pretty impresively.

I have a Savage Weather Warrior with the new hinged floorplate and adjustable muzzlebrakeon order in .338. Hopefully get here soon so I can give you a range report.

I have a stainless Ruger 77 in .338 Win. and I'm getting right around 3/4" - 7/8" three shot groups @ 100 yardsusing 225gr Accubonds. Of course it's far from being "out-of-the-box", with a Boyds stock, Timney trigger, muzzle break (how dare I?) and a Sims recoil pad. Shoots like a dream...:D
