RE: which ammo would u prefer????????

I use Winchester 150 gr power points in my .30-06 and have killed 4 deer with 4 shots using this round. It has performed quite well. My first buck turned as I was squeezing the trigger and the round hit as a quartering shot, entering at the front of the right rear hip, and quartering through the chest at about 110 yards. I recovered the bullet under the skin at the left front shoulder. It had mushroomed perfectly and retained 136 gr, or over 90% of the bullet's weight. I made asimilar recovery from one of my son's does last year. The 100 gr .243 Core Lokt retained only 60 gr.(for the mathematically challenged, that's only 60%).Not sure what that means exactly. I don't think the .30-06 hit any bone on the way through, and the .243 hit a rib, which could account for some of the lost bullet weight. As my shots have always been well short of 200 yards, I don't see the point in forking over the extra green for premium loads. The Winchester Super-X Power Points and Remington Core-Lokt loads are about half the price, and are quite accurate in my rifles. My .243 will put 3 shots inside a dime at 100 yards. I've shot two bucks with it, and both were pass through, double-lung shots leaving a good blood trail. One of them wentabout 40 yards and one of them took about 5 steps before it collapsed. Unless you're hunting where the deer get BIG, there is no reason to use anything bigger than a 150 gr bullet in a .30-06.
