I think its a little small too. However the poster seems to be recoil shy and a 357 is better than a sharp stick. Its also easy enough to carry that one is not as apt to leave it at home. A heavy 180 grain cast bullet would not be that bad for defense against Black Bears.

I guess I could give a .44 mag another try. Foolishly, it was the first handgun I ever fired, so I got kind of soured on it. I've heard a good set of pachmayr grips can really take the bite out of a .44.

I personally don't think that anyone is going to notice recoil when shooting an attacking bear. Recoil is the last thing to worry about;)

Ruger Alaskan. Worlds most powerful compact doubleaction revolver. I have one in the .480 Ruger. here is the other offering available in a .454

ACTUALLY, they now make a .500 S&W in a 2in snubnose. A guy i know just told me that yesterday, and he owns a gun store.

You may not notice the recoil of a 44 or any other gun while shooting at an animal. However shooting starts at the range with sight in and practice. Thats where excessive recoil is not welcome. The Houge grips are also very good and just keep your hand from getting between the bottom of the grip and the top of the bech. Start with 44 special loads and shoot those until your comfortable then move up.

Honestly if bears were the main worry I'd have one of those industrial sized cans of Bear spray. They nuke a path like you wouldn't believe.
You just barely have to aim and let em' have it. I doubt there's a black bear in the world that would come through that fog.:(

If you're slightly worried about the bears and a little more worried about the 2 legged types........the bear spray on one hip and something like the new Springfield XD .45 ACP with 2 full mags should do just fine.
Would double as an extremely effective home defense gun as well.

Either will work on either.;)

That's actually a pretty good idea. The only question I have about bear spray is what if the wind is in my face?

Then your lunch! If a bear wants to attack you, it will, if you messed with it then it will get you even if you spray it. If the bear is really determined then he will run right through it. I dont want to sound like a jerk, but thats the way it is.

Well, yeah. But I'm not one to die for lack of trying.

News to me. Here is S&W's website on the .500 X frame. Still just shows the 4'' barrel. Are you sure he was not mistaken and meant the 4''? http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=11101&storeId=10001& amp;categoryId=15707&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=15703&top_category=15 703
