Boy I have seen everything now

Went to the gun club yesterday to shoot the 338 and the 45/70 and as usual during and right before hunting season it is loaded with everyone shooting and sighting in their rifles. I took a break and walked down the line and found a fellow member shooting his 338 win mag in a browning composite stalker w/ a boss . I asked him how it shot and he said real well and then I looked over the rig and he told me he had fired 1500 rounds thru it more or less and has never Elk hunted with it just NC whiteails. Heres the kicker he had a Tasco scope on it. I'm guessing it was a 3-10 or some variation with a pretty good size objective on it probably in the 44-45 mm range. He said he has had zip problems with it. I just shook my head and walked away.

I do believe in scopes you generally get what you pay for, but I've had good luck with several of the higher priced Tascos (World Class and World Class Plus) over the years. I'd much rather have a Leupold, but the Tasco's have all worked fine. But I've never had one on a .338 either.

I've got a friend that hunts whitetails in WV with his .338. He's never hunted anything larger either, but he just likes the .338.

I guess you hear the horror stories about them(Tasco) and wonder how anything like that survived on that gun. I guess they(scope manufacturers in general) are all getting closer and most of the scopes look alike. That is a bit much as far as a whitetail gun but I really like mine and this year it's going to be used on some Whitetails. I guess I was just suprised the Tasco endured that kind of beating.

well 1 out of 10 tascos break and everone crys "cheap waste of money".
1 out of 20 leupolds breaks and everyone says "its ok they have a good return policy"

A 338 is extreme overkill for small whitetails but the choice of scopes does not surprise me at all. Many people try to save money on scopes and many experience no problems but cheap optics due fail much more often than quality optics.I personally won't take the risk of a failure by using a cheap scope.I have never personally seen a leupold, ziess or swarovski scope fail but I have seen simmons, bsa and several tascos fail in one way or another.

RE: Boy I have seen everything now

I'm not really surprised either except for the caliber choice this caliber and any others in category require a very good scope. I mean his gun has to be in the high 5' to 600 dollar range and to put on a 100 dollar scope makes no sense. Better off with a Savage and buy the expensive scope than the way he had it rigged. But what the heck you see guys on 3000 dollar and up guided hunts walking around with 80 dollar binos and their guides have no better.

I belive you get what you pay for to a certain point. I can not imagine spending $1000 or more for a scope. I did compare a Leupold to a Zeiss. There was a visable difference in clarity and brightness with the Zeiss but not enough to pay $1000 for it. I know that both Freedom Arms and Ruger only will recommend Leupold EER scopes for their 454 casulls. The other brands will not stand up to the recoil. Dad always told me you can't go wrong buying good glass

If he's using the BOSS with the holes in it, their a very effective muzle brake. My 7MM Mag A-Bolt is a dream to shoot with the BOSS, less recoil than a light .270. I have a Vias brake on my custom .338 Ultra Mag, the recoil is less than a 30-06.

Not that I dont agree with about everything said here but haven't we become a bit judgemental. I mean if it works for the guy who owns it then good for him.If I have any scope go 1500 rounds I wont gripe myself. My own regular rifle sports a redfield low-pro.I am not giving it up because it just continues to do whatever I ask of it.

I hope I dont rub anyone the wrong way and I also value a good scope but I just hate to see us cut down other hunters.

RE: Boy I have seen everything now

I personally feel much more comfortable with a premium quality scope on my gun, nor would I use a 338 on a whitetail, but I agree with keylargo. If it's gone 1500 rounds, its done a good job.

To me, a more important question would be the type of bullet he is using. I recently read of a man using a sierra gameking in 300 remington ultra mag for whitetail. Using a caliber that large is ok, but realize you need a very sturdy bullet to handle the velocity and energy those rounds create. The difference between a sierra boattail, and a swift A frame at 3,200 fps is dramatic.

I don't think the 338 is in question here, especially if this person has a Boss on it. But, you definitely get what you pay for with a scope and I hate to say this, Tasco's higher end "Titan" scopes are great value and stand up to a beating. A guy in camp has a 3-12X50 Titan on his 300WinMag for over 4 years now and has had zero problems with it and wouldn't think of trading it for anything. Still not a Tasco fan but my 2 cents anyway.

RE: Boy I have seen everything now

Let me set this straight I am not judging anyones choices in equipment. I myself will probably use my 338 this year on deer along with my 280 . I was just amazed that a scope that has a less than stellar reputation could stand up to a rifle that has tremendous recoil with a muzzle brake to boot on it. Now weren't the Tasco titans made with a titanium tube? They were supposed to be a well made scope and they were not 100 dollar scopes last time I looked at their prices. In any event I was amazed...considering I had a similiar rig 300 win mag winlite with a Gentry muzzlebrake and a 3x9 fullfield II that got scrambled after about oh say 150 round went thru it.

Actually Seattle a 308 will do the trick pretty much everywhere but those of us that are bitten by gunwriteritis like wacking deer and other animals with anything that's in the gun safe. There are some places where you can get some amazing long shots here and the big boomers are not out of place. I like brushing up with the big cannons and take them to places like Alabama with its liberal bag limit so I can brush up on Deer with them because they are way to big for shooting groundhogs.

RE: Boy I have seen everything now

I've had 2 Tasco's fail me! They were both on a .308 Winchester!
I will never buy another one, but I know that you could get a good Tasco or a bad Leupold for that matter!
Propmahn says that 1 in 10 makes the Tasco bad and 1 in 20 makes the Leupold good! If that were true, then the Leupold is a least twice as good as the Tasco! Quality control cost a lots of money and that is where some of the extra cost in quality glass comes from! Stopping a bad scope from ever leaving the factory!
Another cost of quality, is the warranty. I have never had to use the warranty on my Leupold, but I have heard that they are quick to fix or replace your scope. Tasco did replace my broken scope, it only took them 3 months! Hunting season was long over before I got my scope back!
You just can't go wrong buying good glass! To me a cheap scope is a gamble that sooner or later will cost you!
My first Tasco failed at the range, no problem!
My second Tasco failed in the field, no deer!

overkill....rotflmao...that gun must be able to kill a deer twice.

http://community.webshots.com/user/alfandmaryf
ALF is right about kill twice. Just hunt from a ground stand, wait intil the deer line-up two or three deep and take one shot. Fill the freezer and save on money and time. Of course my .243 can do it also, but everybody likes talking about the .338. I hunt with a .338 because I like the gun, it does the job I ask it to do, and the cheap Tasco socpe, that I bought for $69, puts the bullet where the crosshairs are. Why do you worry about what other people/hunters/shooters do. If that shooter's gun is not working, be kind enough to help him find the problem. Which may be the scope. Otherwise, leave him alone. He is doing the best he can!

You have not seen it all, not by a long shot!

A year ago I was working at my clubs rifle sight in clinic when a family of Hmong came over to the line one bench over from where I was working. There were 3 of them, an ancient man, a middle aged man who was probably his son, and another who must have been the grandson in his late teens/early twenties. The Middle aged man pulled out what I think was a very old Mosin Nagant and put it on the bench in front of the old man. No big deal the club member who was working the bench thought as we see a few mausers and Enfields every year that customers bring. To his suprise, the younger man produced an old scope, a short piece of wood and a roll of duct tape. The old man held the gun, the middle aged man held the scope on top of the piece of wood on top of the rifle, and the youngest member of the family proceeded to wrap duct tape around the entire scope and rifle. The club member at the bench was at wits end at this point and didn't knwo what to do. The old man fired a few shots which hit very low. They proceeded to unwrap the duct tape carefully, place a thin wooden shim under the rear of the scope and rewrapped it with the same tape. Amazingly enough, the bullets were on the paper now. The middle aged man adjusted the elevation and windage on the scope and the old man proceeded to shoot a very respectable group around the bullseye.

I have no doubt that this man got his deer last year, and probably gets his every year.

Don't judge people by what they shoot or the price of their scope or gun. Not everyone can afford the best stuff not is everyone out to impress others. Not all hunters are 'gun guys' I would bet the majority of them use whatever tool they can get their hands on to allow them to partake in the yearly hunt.

Oh BTW, my .308 had a tasco on it for years and I never had a problem. I recently upgraded to a Leupold and put the Tasco on a .22.

Yeah, I know. I've shot deer with a .338 Win Mag myself. It does a respectable job, and I actually think it preferable to the 300 RUM or 7mm STW for that purpose. Hurts too much, though.

I just like the looks of a full-length stock in the thick woods.

Briman, that is one of the best stories I've ever heard, and your point was made very well. I have become pretty judgemental lately on the subject of guns and hunting, and in reality, while I consider myself pretty knowledgeable, I have a truckload to learn. Thanks for giving me a fresh point of view.

i have had used tasco's in the past when i just started hunting. one worked alright on my 35rem but then i have had problems with scopes like tasco's staying on the zero for me. also they always fogged up for me.
i have broken 3 golden antler ones 3-9X32mm. i just don't want to miss the big one so i have been with luepold's now. very crisp and no fogg. i will never turn around again to anything cheaper unless i throw a cheap scope ( under $200.00 ) on my muzzleloader.

Quilly 10-30-2002 04:09 AM

RE: Boy I have seen everything now

ohh i forgot to add this..

several buddies of mine that i hunt with in maine. one uses a tasco golden antler 3-9X32mm on his 35rem gets groups about 2.5" at 75yds. he has tried every bullet out there. also it takes him about 2 boxes to get it finally sighted in. he has this same problem every year.
it just looks to me the more you pay the tighter the groups are and if you drop it in the woods 95% of the time it is still dead on. i have had this several times happen to me.

RE: Boy I have seen everything now

The Tasco Titan is their top of the line scope and it does have a titanium tube. Up here its around $550 CDN ($360 US).

Oldelhunter, I might have misunderstood but you didn't indicate the type of scope on the Browning, just the make. My point was that he might have had a better Tasco scope then a bottom of the line model.

I know some guys who's rigs are really basic and cheap and work well. I also know a guy with a top of the line Redfield that couldn't hit the side of a barn because the scope is shot, I'm sure there's some Leupold owners out there that have had problems also. Some guys just have luck that way, the buy what they can afford and it happens to work without problems.

Good story Briman, you've hit the nail on the head. The Bonus: Another good use for duct tape.

RE: Boy I have seen everything now

All I am saying and again I will repeat myself is that I am amazed that in a caliber like that a Tasco scope could survive the recoil. I f you bothered to read my posts you would have seen that I had a burris fullfield II that maybe went 150 rounds and gave up the ghost on a 300 win mag. I have not heard much good/bad about Burris lately. No this guy did not have a titan scope on it because I researched Tascos yesterday and it definitely did not have a 30 mm tube on it. Anyone here can buy whatever they want good or bad and put it on their gun(s) that is none of my business and if it makes them happy I am happy for them. I tend not to listen to gun writers and hearsay but I have to admit that Tascos for whatever reason have had a bad rap and that is why I am amazed that this scope can take this much punishment.

Looks like we are arguing to prove the same point. With my luck if I ever bought a Tasco, it would turn out to be a dud too.

I have a non adjustable Tasco I bought at K Mart maybe 15 years ago.. has been on my 10/22 for about 10 years now. I sight it in every year or so and it does fine.. has always been a good scope.

I am going ot buy a Swift for my new 700 .270. I don't want to spend 200 plus bux on optics
