Scope for .17 HMR
I'm going to purchase a .17 HMR in the near future and I'd like to match it up with a good scope. I'm looking in the price range b/t $150 - $250.
Any suggestions on a good scope in that price range? I've been looking around and I noticed there are specific scopes for .17, but how are these any different from a standard rim-fire scope or any other type scope for that matter? |
RE: Scope for .17 HMR
I tried a sweet 17 scope,but ended up with a simmons 44 mag 6.5-20,nice for about 125.00.

I had a Bushnell Trophy 6-18 x 40 on my Savage. The scope did the trick, to bad the rifle didn’t....

RE: Scope for .17 HMR
I was actually looking at the Savage .17 HMR at the gun shop the other day and considered buying it. What's wrong with it?

RE: Scope for .17 HMR
I enjoyed shooting it but wasn’t getting good groups. Probably with the new accutrigger would be better. I also found it was not balances well with the bull barrel and the synthetic stock for a small rifle. The rifle was heavy towards the front. This is just my personal opinion...

RE: Scope for .17 HMR
Bushnell legend puts out a descent scope in that range.

I was just looking at the Redhead Epic 3 X 9 X 40(silver). Any idea who makes these scopes?

RE: Scope for .17 HMR
Redhead(bass pro)and Cabelas hire their stuff out and they won't tell who makes it. Example. Cabelas sells a carbon stalker arrow that looks just like a Beman arrow and I am sure they are made by Beman. Employees said they would put there money with me but would not confirm as they aren't told either.

RE: Scope for .17 HMR
Red Head Epic is made by NIKON. It is a great scope for the price, Simmons made their scopes until last year, then the went to NIKON I put one on my Encore 209 %0 and love it and it only cost about $100.00

RE: Scope for .17 HMR
I have the savage with the heavy barrel and wood stock. Very nice shooting rifle. I did the trigger shim trick and changed out the spring and it is better now. I get simular groups to above, at the least it shoots into one inch at 100 yards with the Vmax's.
I did a test last year with a bunch of .22 ammo and threw my .17 into the mix just for the heck of it. I was testing for drop and accuracy with the different types of .22 ammo on the market. I shot groups from 50,75 and 100 yards. 3 shots from each yardage with each ammo. My savage .17 put all nine shots in a hole a dime would cover from 50-100 yards! That is pretty impressive to me. Incase you are wondering the best .22 ammo I tried was the CCI velociter or what ever they are called. Very minimal drop at 100 yards with a 50 yard sight in and I could get 1 inch groups at 100 yards with it. My .17 has a cabela's brand Alaskan Guide model on it. 6.5-20X44 with an adjustable objective. I am very happy with it, but it cost a little over 400 bucks with the rings. Don't go too cheap, these guns are accurate enough they deserve a decent scope. The $200 range should serve you well. Really depends on what you want to do with it and how much power you want. The more magnification you want the more it will cost to get a decent scope. If you are talking a 3-9 power hunting scope or something simular 200 bucks should get you a very good scope. If you are talking about a bigger scope with AO that would be the lowest price range I would look at. Paul |

ORIGINAL: hardcorehunter Trailer, my wife has that exact same rifle, the 93R17, and she can put 3 bullets in a dime with it at 100 yds. |
