Good Walkabout Varmint Rifle
Any opinions on a lightweight 7 lb or so Varmint rifle with real good accuracy. Would like it to be a repeater in the very rare event I miss;)Will be used on Coyotesexclusively and there is a chance of some long shots. Don't want to lug a 10 lb varmint special around.

RE: Good Walkabout Varmint Rifle
Nice little .243 with 3X9 scope ought to do the trick. Not nearly as heavy as a .22-250, and will turn the lights out on any coyote.

Hmmm did not think about a 243..that would be a good one

This one takes the cake. Also happens to break the bank, but I'm sure the money spent would be well worth it.:D

Nice to see you back... I haven’t seen one up close but would like to get my hand on the Remington 700 LVSF. Nice and light at 6-3/4 lb. with a good choice of cartridges...

RE: Good Walkabout Varmint Rifle
I bought the rifle below over a month ago and have yet to fire a shot with it. The Remington LVSF in 223 Rem fills my niche for a walkabout/beater varmint rifle. I have a Leupold M8 12X fixed ready to replace the 6.5x20x Nikon thats on it now. I am confident the combo will work well.

I have a gun for just that occasion. I use a stevens 200 made by savage in .223. the stock is flimsy tupperware, but MAN does this thing shoot! They can easily group sub MOA stock. I'm doing that with 45gr Winny white box JHP ammo. 12 bucks for a box of 40! Of course, I payed 285 for the rifle and spent the rest on weaver mounts, burriz sig-zee rings, and a nikon monarch UCC 4-12x40AO. This thing does anything i need it to do and in a heartbeat!
if you don't like the thought of the stock, that's up to you. you could go weather warrior in a savage and take the synthetic home. little better stock. Outperform that remington for half the price! |
RE: Good Walkabout Varmint Rifle
I have a browning eclipse with a thumbhole stock in 22-250. It was only made for couple of years and it doesn't have the heavy barrel, but shoots better than any heavy barrel I have touched. It isn't heavy either. I have slammed groundhogs at 400+ yards with it. It is my favorite gun by far.

This one might interest you also. Don't know if they're available yet but I'd like one in 22 hornet.

RE: Good Walkabout Varmint Rifle
I did a little comparisons this morning. I decided to weigh a few of my varmint guns They ranged from 14 lbs 6 ozs to 6 lbs 3ozs. Each one has it's own personality and purpose.
Here is a side by side pic of a Rem 40X with Leupold 8.5x25, it weighs in at 12lbs 2ozs, the rifle on the right is a Rem 700 LVFS with a Leupold M8 12X which goes at 8lbs even. ![]() |

The Ruger all weather would be a good choice as well. IMO.
