Looking for a good deer hunting rifle

I have recently moved to South Carolina and I am in the market for a good deer hunting rifle. Does anyone have a suggestions. I am really leaning toward a 30-06.

For deer only,my choice would be a tikka t-3 in 25-06.The 25-06 shoots flatter than a 30-06 with less recoil, and is plenty for any deer let alone the smaller bodied southern deer.

What other rifles do you now currently own?
What other rifles have you shot to date and how did you fair?

If it is your first and only center fire high power, then 30-06 is a fine, fine round IMO and you're on the right track.

It won't leave you short should you return to Ohio or maybe "up north" from Ohio or out West someday. Of course buying another rifle later onis always an option if you are sensitive to the Southern folks accusing you of "overgunning" for the local fauna with a 30-06!

The 30-06 Sprg. will do a fine job for you. Good luck.

I have a number of guns.I have a Browing a-bolt medalion in a .270 and a Browning a-bolt Stainless stalker in a 30-06 with a BOSS.Both guns have plenty of power for a deer.If you are shooting in a brusharea get a 30-06.IF you are in open land buy a .270 or a .270WSM.The Browning a-bolts are the most acurate bolt rifle for the money. If you are looking for a semi auto buy the Browning BAR or a Remington 7400.I have them both too.The BAR shoot slitely better than the 7400.But if you look at the price the 7400 is the better deal.If you dont care about the price buy the BAR.Good luck!

Any good bolt action rifle in .25-06, .270, .308, or .30-06 would serve you well when topped with a good scope. If you are leaning toward a .30-06, then get one. You won't be disappointed.

For SC all you need is the .270

Thanks for all of the great advice! After doing some research I am straying away from the 30-06 and looking into a savage .308 with the new acu trigger. Has anyone had any experience with this rifle. This will be the first rifle I will shoot. Been very accustomed to shotguns in Ohio.

I have a new 270 WSM Savage with the Accu-Trigger. I love it so far. Best thing out there for the money. IMO. Great choice of Caliber. I have a 308 in the Browning A-Bolt.

I have shot the savage but it does not shoot as well as the browning a-bolt.The.308 is also a good caliber but a 30-06 is more versable. You can shoot a deer, elk, moose, bear, pig and more with a 30-06.If you want just a deer gun the .308 will serve you fine.

Good choice the 308 will level most anything on this continent if the shooter does his part.

I'll second the positive comments on the 308. The difference between it and the 30-06 are so little that (unless you get into the heavy bullets) a few inches of barrel length can make then identical.

Savage is also argueably the best-for-the-money rifle out there right now. The prettiest, no. The fanciest, no. But an accurate, functioning, solid and dependable rifle...absolutely.

I love the 308win-based family of cartridges 243win, 260rem (my favourite of course) 7mm/08, 308win and I am very impressed with the new 338 Federal.
For what your after then either the 260rem, 7mm/08 or the 308win would be great as to the rifle I like Remington’s Sako’s and Styer’s.

You could do much worse than a .308.

I find the .308 to be very docile, predictable, accurate, andjust plain easy.
When shooting at paper, it isone of my favorites.

The .308 also lets youjoin the "sexy" short action crowd....
though the Savage riflemay pretty much offset that.

It will work on deer for sure.
Could even qualify as a "30-06 equivalent" should you lose your waystray out West.
