.22 mag: Worth it?

I recently purchased a single six with the interchangeable cylinders and bought a box of .22 mags just to see how the gun shot with them.

Mostly, they were a bit louder than the .22 LR and about twice as expensive.

I'm half considering picking up a .22 mag rifle, but don't know if it's worth it. It's almost as expensive to shoot them as a .223, assuming you can find bulk or surplus ammo, and not as powerful and explosive on impact.

With advent of the new .17 rimfires, will the .22 mag end up obsolete?

I have a single six with the interchangeable cylinders like you...my trigger is absolutely horrible, I hope you're is better. (Mines 30 years old so maybe they've maybe some quality improvements) I really don't know if the 22mag will become an obsolete round or not. It has a very limited "niche" to begin with, and the new 17s certainly crowd in on it. I will probably always prefer the .22mag for anything less than 100yards though because I'm a follow the "big 'n slow" crowd over the "light n' fast".

I did a poor mans trigger job on mine by taking the grip off and disabling one side of the trigger return spring. It cut's the trigger pull of a Ruger down substantially. Here's a link on how to do it http://www.gunblast.com/Poorboy.htm

I guess I should give the disclaimer about it being safe on my gun, but may not be on yours.

they are a step up in rimfires only if your gun has the accuracy to shoot groups good enough to make use of the additional velocity.

The 22 Mag I had didn't do that and I haven't bought another one.....others have had different experiences than I.

I can still buy 22 LR shells for $.02 each.....can you really get the Mags for $.04?.....

From reports I have read the 22 WRM doesn't develop any real edge over the .22lr in pistols. Only in rifles does the 22 mag develop the much greater performance. Supposedly its due to the slow burning powders in the .22mag that basically just create greater muzzle flash in revolvers due to the short barrel. Don't know for certain but the chronograph results I ve seen claimed seem to support it. hope it helps.

If you can chronograph the .22 Magnum cylinder, I think you will find you are getting way less than the rated velocity the cartridge is capable of in a rifle. Louder, but not neccesarily more power, or at least not much more than .22 LR. Interchangable cylinder revolvers are also producedwith a compromise bore/groove diameter, and are often not as accurate with .22 Magnum as with .22 LR.
If you like it, no problem. I don't think it is worth the extra ammunition cost, but that's just me.

Just buy a .223, it will be tons better for varmints and much more fun to shoot. If you want a plinking gun buy a normal .22 LR. That's what I'd do.

some areas like mine do not have centerfire outdoor ranges,at 100 yard or so the mag. and the hmr are much better than the 22 lg.also there not as noisy as the centerfire, less recoil, they have their uses for sure.

I love the 22 Mag in a rifle. However in a pistol, I could not see much advantage. Put them in a 24 in rifle barrel though and I wouldn't trade it for ten 17 mags. Unless I could sell them and buy another 22 Mag.:D

i know a guy in WV that shot the biggest buck i have ever seen in person with a .22 mag because he was groundhog huntin on his property IN DEER SEASON SO IT WAS SORTA LEGAL. but it's still not good to do that[:@]

"Sorta legal"? Isn't that kind of like 100% illegal?:)

I have the marlin 883 in .22 mag. and would not trade it for nothing. I will not get into what it is use for because I know the people on this forum but it is one of the best guns I own. I have no use for the pistol but the rifle can't be beet. just my 2 cents

The .17hmr is an awesome round. I have a savage mod 93R17that will put 5 rounds under a quarter at 100 yds. I myself would stick with the .17hmr for a rimfire gun for extreme accuracy and great killing power on varmints. I have heard guys taking coyotes up to 100 yds. Maybe a little light though. The .17hmr is here to stay IMO but I don't think the .17 mach 2 will. Sales on the mach 2 are slow but dealers sell the heck out of the .17hmr. I have an AccutriggerSavage 93R17BTVS on order and can't wait. Here it is.

I own a Marlin .22mag and it is extremely accurate. I would not trade it. It is great on squirrels but to be honest not much better than a .22lr. I have shot 2 coyotes with it and had great results both times. I cannot say wether or not a .223 is better because they both have different selling points and different uses. I say if you are having trouble deciding.... get both. Good luck and have fun shooting.

The 22Mag serves a purpose here in WV. We can only use rimfire rifles at night for Coyotes. The 22mag is more effective than the 22lr. How it compares to the 17hmr for yotes, i don't know but its about as good as we can do here for nightime yote hunting

i love my magnum (marlin bolt action) ofcoarse i have had it for rite at ten years and they didnt offer the 17hmr at the time. Now when i go to replace it i will go with the .17 due to longer flater, faster rounds and the fact i saw a guy put 3 round into a clay pidgeon without busting it at 100yards. thats just a fast freakin round.
