Remington 673 Guide Rifle.308win

Can i take this Remington 673 Guide Rifle.308win to a gunsmith & have it modified into a 338 Win or .340 weatherby & if so price if you have any idea, what it might cost me to do this...

All your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Only reason i want to modify gun is for Elk or moose hunting, i believe .308 caliber is to small, & dealer is marking several hundred dollars off the cost of this Model because I think remington , wont be making it much linger.

Hi Slow:

I believe the 673 is all about short actions, so you have to live within those limitations. For what it would cost you to rebarrel to .350 Rem, you might as well just sell your .308 and purchase a rifle with an action that will take the longer cartridges you are considering.

The 308 is a short action from the word GO. You could go with the new 338 Federal with that action. IMO thats going to be a good cartridge.

Well a 350 rem Mag is much more powerful than a mere 35 remington. Night and day difference between those two. And as James B said the new 338 Federal is certainly an option. It's actually a 308 hull necked up to 33 caliber so there's no doubt that your current action will handle it.

Not to mention that the 338 Federal will always have cases available and IMO it is the best-designed cartridge for short actioned rifles for use on big game.

I agree. I hope some more gun makers will jump on this one and help give it a jump start. Anything based on the 308 case has some real merit. Its a very effective case that really eeks out the power from a small powder charge.

With light recoil and a short bolt throw and its ability to be chambered in short brush guns, it will make a great choice as a fast handling dangerous game rifle.
