model 96 mauser

What has happen to the price of this gun the price has went thru the roof. You use to buy them all day for $100.00 mil. type the last 8 or 9 of these I has seen the price start at $350.00 and go up from there. I know this gun will outshoot just about any rifle out there but time you sportrize it with scope , bend the bolt and a new stock you got $700.00 to $800.00 in them for a gun that is 100 years old. I own 6 of this gun and you dont have the money to buy any of them from me but the starting price is crasy. ? does this price stand true everwhere or just where I live here in Va.

You buy them down here for AU$350 they sold one called a M96 sporter deluxe that was made from stockpile surplus M96’s that they put into a synthetic stock and turned the bolt and cut the barrel to 24”. You could buy one new with a 6X40 silver crown scope for AU$450 and they sell for $350 second hand.
I have owned a few and loved them.

I could live with $350.00 wish I was there to get a couple of them.

yes...they're high priced.....IMO way way over the value.....I can still get VZ-24 ('98 Mauser) for $150.......and wouldn't give a dime for a truckload of mausers prior to the model of 1898.

Obviously there are those that disagree with me,......
Let them buy them all they want....

Here's a hint: They are outstanding rifles, they are no longer made, and importers no longer have warehouses full of them.

Overpriced? It all depends on how you see it. A rifle that was carefully and painstakenly put together with handfitted parts or a remington 700 mass produced from cheap stamped or potmetal parts? Take your pick.

$150 might buy you a VZ-24 with a shot out barrel, I haven't seen any for less than $200 that weren't completely shot out in a long time. $150 is still an excellent bargain for the action alone. Of course you can still find 98/22s that use the same action with good barrels for around $100, or unused 98/29s with the same action for around $200 ( I just love my 98/29:D).

I have 2. A M38 and a M96, The M96 I got as a package deal, M96 barreled action and a P14 Enfield for $150. Couldn't go wrong. The M96 has been cut back to 22" and had a scope mounted. A Boyd bros stock addorns it, laminated. I glass bed the action, put a Timney trigger onand made some handloads w/ 140gr bullets. When I do my part she'll shoot inside 3/4" at 100yds 5 shots. Long story short..... somebody offered me $700 for it at the range. For $350 I wouldn't have bought my M96, b/c I wanted a barreled action only. $350 is a little steep anywhere you look but that is the going rate. People have seen them around and have come to like them, in my family there are 6. Resources have dried and the ones on the market are generally the ones that came in in the boom yrs. PS there is no way that rifle will ever leave my possession except when my wife wants to hunt w/it.

It is called economics. No more produced, and no more for the Swedes to sell off. Demand for unaltered specimens is going up, and will continue to rise.
Same thing has happened to every surplus rifle since Bannerman bought and sold them. Priced a 1903 Springfieldlately?

RE: model 96 mauser

Leave it as is in 6.5x55 and go out and shoot near one hole groups.:DThats what I do with mine. To my notion there is not a better medium size game rifle made. It will take most of NA's biggest game as well. All this with next to no recoil. I have quite a few Mausers, None will outshoot the 96 in 6.5x55.

Win military rifle matches:D

BTW, nice rifle Vapodog.

My VZ is a 6.5-55 as well believe it or not

I remember reading a guy's statement here that his 6.5 shoots 3/4" groups at 200 yrds with iron sights.......yup...I can't do that.....

RE: model 96 mauser

200yds< I can't do that either...... i said 100yds w/scope and the rifle is only limited by ME. I use mine for deer hunting and have also taken a moose w/it. Mild recoil is an understatement. My wife has put her name on it and I'm shooting deer w/.30-06 (a little overgun for my liking even for CDN whttail) I shoot 140gr pills and have never had any game animal run over 50yds, actually of the 12 or 13 game animals taken w/it only 2 have gone anywhere. Those 140's are over an inch long and penetrate like MAD

James B 04-11-2006 09:33 AM

RE: model 96 mauser

I agree. I have used the 140 grain Hornady spire point for almost all of my hunting with the 6.5. Very effective cartridge.

Vapor you just can let it go can you. It was me that said it. You spend 12 weeks in sniper school and shoot at least 1000 round a year and you can to, just use a bench and sand bags. OH if you need a target thatI shot at 200 yards I will see if I can load it for you.

wow.....Hey Ren.....I got $100 that says you can't do in front of witnesses.....Put your money where your keyboard is.....
BTW it'll be worth the $100 to me to see it but bring cash as I don't accept promises or checks.

I left one as a 6.5 Swede and turned the other into a .30-'06. Just have to be sure not to load the '06 too hot and she'll shoot like nobody's business.

RE: model 96 mauser

All right but where you live the bet will have to be differant than just $100,00 dollars. Here is how it will have to be I will buy the plane ticket about $700.00 dollars to fly where you are to shoot on you're range, my gun and my ammo 3 shots 200 yards 3/4 of a inch open sights when this is done the loser pays for the plane ticket and the $100.00 dollar so the total bet will be about $800.00 dollars if you are up for it then the BET IS ON. Cash in hand the day of the shoot.
I will have to wait till after easter which is this weekend but after that I am open because I am retired so we can do this any day. the only thing is it will have to be a nice day no rain or 20 to 30 m.p.h winds. I am ready if you are.

Ren, where are you located.....?
Maybe I'll drive to your range.....

RE: model 96 mauser

Asmall town in western VA.area code 24263 a long way from Nebraska. But I will fly in just to prove a point to you. SO IS THE BET ON I will need a couple of days to buy a plane ticket and if you know how hard is it to take a gun on a plane now days after 9/11, I would think it is not easy but I will get it there even if I have to shipped it to a ffl. dealer and pick it up when I get there. Let me know

RE: model 96 mauser

Hey Kodiakarcher, .30-06, that sounds interesting. What do you shoot in it? Have a .308 barrel that my gunsmith isn't too keen on fitting due to chamber pressures.... its a heavy barrel and I would love to have sucha rifle but don't really want to 'hack' my last pristine mil. rifle. I know that the M96 has better safety features than most modern bolt actions and is only second to the 98. And did you blueprint the action, i have heard thatv this will help w/accuracy and full powr loads..... uneven pressure on the rear of the locking lugs.
