Picked up My 44 Mag rifle today
 

I went down to the gun shop today and picked up my new Marlin 44 Mag rifle that I had on layaway. It has a kind of a blond stock and the fit and finish is real nice. Great blueing. I picked up one box of 210 gr, Silvertips and one box of Winchesters loaded with 250 grain Partitions. I looked at some scopes as I had 125.00 credit left over after a trade but decided to look over my stock on hand first. He has a good selection of 3200's in stock. He also stocks Swift and Leupold as well as Nikon. He had a good selection of Pro-Staffs too. Come on SPRING.

LOL James I shot most of the afternoon here. Shot about 100 rounds out of a 357 levergun. It was about 75 here today :D

I also am anxious in trying out my 44 Trapper but think it’s going to be a while before I have a chance. James, are you considering reloading for that 44. I still haven’t decided but was told to reload some 300 gr. bullet incase I encounter bears. What are your thoughts on that 300 gr. pill ? ...:eek:

OK for You DD, 70 degrees, Well belive it or not, it was 51 here today.

Trailer. Yes I will reload for this one. I had one before and loaded mostly the 200 grain XTP. However a good 300+ cast bullet would be great medicine for bears. Let me get in touch with my cast buller Guru and see what he has for info. I would first look into the LBT cast bullets as they are famous for big wound channels. My friend loads a lot of cast bullets for the Lever guns. Your Trapper will have a different twist rate and may be better for cast bullets than the Marlin. I have to get to studying this stuff again. I have the Legacy in 44 Mag just about picked up as well. That one has the 24 inch barrel

You will get good penetration with the 300 Grain Hornady XTP as well. I put one of those completely through a Mulie at 200 yards. Including one shoulder.

Does anyone know when marlin went away from the micro groove....or do they still use it in there .44mag?

James, I’ve never reloaded with cast bullets and wouldn’t even know where to start and have no reloading manuals for cast. I’d have to find out if they are available around here. Probably, but not sure. The Hornady 300 XTP does interest me though and taking that Mule at 200 yards is something else. Reloading for my 44 will be a new experience for me being that I have to crimp the neck because of the tubular magazine. Don’t be surprised if you see a post from me asking for some help...:eek:...:D

Cabalas has the LBT hard cast bullets, and they come with loading data inside the box! James midway has the fixed power weaver scopes this month(April) for $20.00 off and they should be almost bullet proof, you may want to check them out.

I don't think you can beat the lee factory crimp die for loading for the levers.

I emailed my cast bullet expert friend for some more info. I have loaded tons of cast pistol bullets but am rather new to cast rifle bullets. LBT bullets are top of the line.

I think Marlin got away from the micro groove but I don't know when either. I will try to find out.

Trailer. That 200 yard shot was from a Muzzle loader shooting the 300 XTP.
