Suggestions for a "Deer Only" rifle?

RE: Suggestions for a "Deer Only" rifle?
Why would you wanna waste money on 2 guns if you can have gun that can kill both deer and elk? Just get a .270 or .30-06. Will take down deer and elk with not very much meat damage at all. .300 Weatherby's are a lil too expensive for most and might be a little overkill for a deer at close range. I seen someone shoot .300 at the shooting bench yesterday and I could feel the percussion from 50 ft. away and see a 3-4 inch flame shoot out the barrel. I can easily imagine what it will do to a deer at 50 yards.

I really like the .260 idea but I have a few questions? Is the .260 going to stand the test of time? Will ammo be available 10 yrs. from now? I'm thinking of getting a deer only rifle in the Rem 700 Mtn rifle in either a .260, 7mm-08 or 30-06. I just cant make up my mind!

I say 270, 7mm-08, 7MM rem Mag, 308 or 3006. Now well these could double for an anything guns, they also are good deer guns. The 7 rem mag and 3006 are the heaviest hitters in recoil but do a dandy job on deer sized animals. I actually would personally rather have a gun that wouldn't be limited to just deer, reason you may like it better than the Elk gun. All the above calibers would allow you to chase elk, just may have to limit shot and range.

I've always liked the 257 Roberts for deer. Got the chance to shoot a Ruger #1 in that caliber. What a sweet shooting little gun! Absence of recoil, light weight, extremely accurate. My two cents.

Gee, guys, the whole point of this discussion is to recommend a "deer only" rifle so he won't have to lie to his wife when he tells her he needs an "elk rifle." I think the .257 Roberts may be the best suggestion yet. If he had one of those, even her dad would have to agree that he needed something heavier before going out in the woods to chase bulls around. Then he would have the enviable task of getting to shop for a suitable .300 magnum, with his lovely wife's blessing.
The .25-06 makes good sense, as does the .260 Rem. Any other suggestions?

Penobscot - If I had to recommend one of the cartridges you're thinking about, I'd have to go with 7mm/08. It truly is the perfect deer round. Also, I think the .260 Rem is perfect, but I can't quite answer your question as to where it will be in the scheme of things in 10-20 years. All I can do is point out the example set by the 7mm/08: Sales started out very slow, but the gun press loved it and eventually deer hunters came around, got over their "magnumitis" and gave the little cartridge a try. Now you will hardly see a post on this or any other forum or in the media related to deer hunting (and elk, for that matter) that doesn't sing the praises of the 7mm/08. While initial sales of the .260 have been sluggish, the gun press likes this round, too, and I know first-hand that it is a top-notch performer on deer to all reasonable ranges. I would not be afraid at all to make your deer rifle chambered for this round. You will be very happy you did.
