742 is a nice rifle. I had one in .30-06 until some rat bastard broke into my house and stole it. Never had any reliability problems, and it was plenty accurate. Notquite as accurate as my Model 700's, but plenty accurate for field work... And, $300 sounds like a good deal.

Sounds like a good price if it is in good condition. See if you can test fire it a couple of times before you buy.
The thing to look out for in the 742 is ejection problems.
Also if you buy it I would suggest a professional cleaning including having the firing chamber polished.
I have a 742 .30-06 (brand new in 1961) that has served me well. I killed my firstdeer with it when I was 10 years old. The only problems have been ejection issues.
But, thanks to the forum, I have learned have to avoid those.
