RE: Remington 700 SPS Dm
The SPS line seems to be a great gun for the price. Particularly the stainless model. I would advise to stay away from the DM, though. Not one of Remington's better ideas. Either go with the regular BDL type gun or, if you must have the detachable magazine, get the one made by HS Precision. The Remington DM is a pretty flimsy contraption, IMO.

RE: Remington 700 SPS Dm
I concure with Roskoe. THe SPS is just as well built as any 700 out there. What you don't get with the SPS is all the bells and whistles that other 700's may come with. Like polished blueing, HS precision made stocks, jeweled bolt bodies, etc... It's the same rifle as the old ADL but with a hinged floor plate and "fancier" synthetic stock.
I also agree with the comments about the detachable mags. I don't like to have any of them. It's just something else to keep up with and they are waaaaaaaaay too easy to leave laying back at the truck, home, or camp for you to discover that you don't have it only after you have arrived at your hunting destination or 500 verticle feet above your camp. [:@] A blind magazine or hinged floor plate is never away from its gun and you can never leave one behind. |

I don't agree at all with the comments about the detachable mags.Between myself and my hunting partners we ownsix 700 rifles with detachable mags.Despite several years of useage in some tough hunting conditions, none have failed to function or been lost.If you are so forgetful that you would leave your magazine at home, how do you remember your keys, your license, your ammunition etc?

Stubblejumper - I can't believe you guys aren't having problems with cartridges popping out of those flimsy Remington magazines. They don't seem to be able to handle any sort of rough use. Take a look at a HS Precision DM setup sometime . . . you will see what I mean.

RE: Remington 700 SPS Dm
My detachable mag rifle has been on many horseback and backpack hunts in extreme weather, with no problems at all.Even the long 7mmstw cases feed perfectly. My friends rifles are 7mmremmags and 338win mags and they have all seen rough conditions, again without a single problem. The h-s system is nice, but the factory remington system has proven to be very reliable for us.

RE: Remington 700 SPS Dm
I will have to admit that my experience with these has been limited to short action calibers only. Maybe they work better with the long magnum calibers. Sure didn't work that well in .308 Winchester for me.

Watch out for the SPS blueing, make sure you oil it regularly!! That matte blueing on the SPS's rust very easily!!! I would go with the SST!!
FYI, I have a Remington Mountain Rifle in 7mm-08 with the DM and have had no problems at all! |
