Let's try a .416 Barrett???
How about this thunderstomper? 41 caliber, 400grains doin 3200+fps. Claimed to still be doing supersonic @ 2500yds. Barrett shortened a 50BMG case and this is what we get. Sounds like THE ultimate elk rifle too me.

Sooooooooooo now we have it, THE ultimate "short mag"
Reckon we can get a group buy?

Gotta love Barrett. California bans .50 rifles and Barrett answers them by necking down a .50 bmg case to 41 caliber and makes an outstanding (and powerful)new long range cartridge.

This thread has good timing too. I was just at the grocery store and picked up Barrets Tactical Weapons 2006 annual. On the cover is the new .416.
Briefly thumbing through it they mention that they are working with bullet manufacturers about getting some high BC expanding bullets designed specifically for big game.
Talk about a long range elk rifle.

I am sure we will. As the elk toughen up we will soon need these calibers just to defend ourselves. With a gun like that I could shoot from ND and take Elk in Montana.. Save me a lot of driving. I wouldn't have to pick up the meat, it would be spoiled before I got there. Unless I salt the bullets good.. Gotta love these new whizbangs.

Awe James B. have a laugh ya old goat!!!
Barrett's just makin new products and starting new markets. From a hunting point of view I could see this cartridge surpassing the 50 in popularity. It's more, dare I say, "practical" and the gun can be made several pounds lighter without increasing recoil.
I'm excited about it. After carrying that 50 lastyear I have become interested in one now. BUT it was 40 pounds and sheer hell to maneuver 20' off the ground. This new one is in the mid 20# range.
Where do I sign?
RA
ps
Really James, go ahead admit it, it's ok. You CAN like it, I promise no one will be mad!!!
pss
Another thing that caught my attention. Did you notice the scope on the package? It was a Bushnell 3200Elite 10x40. Who would've thought it would survive atop a 50 based cartridge, much less be packaged by the maker with it?
