7mm-08 or 280 Rem
Looking to buy a new rifle in one of these calibers, what are the pros and cons of each????
|
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
What you plan on using it for?
|
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
I have both calibers, the 7mm-08 has less recoil and that is what I would pick. Check out this site...

RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
Mainly Whitetails or Mule deer, might make it to Alaska for Caribou. I have a 300 win mag for elk.
|
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
One is a long action and other is a short action.
280rem is almost a 7mmremmag, and I know several folks that find accurate reloads that exceeds some accurate rem mag loads. 7mm-08 is one of the most ideal whitetail calibers, but only expect 2700fps for a 140gr bullet. 280 recoils a little more. Thats about it. Here is what I do in your situation. Take a coin and flip it in the air, heads 7mm-8, tails 280, cause none of the animals will care you shoot. |
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
I prefer the 7mm-08,but they are close.Figure if you want short or long action, and then just buy which ever rifle you like.

RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
As the other posters have responded, there is not much difference, especialy with lighter (120-150gr)bullets. I personally would favor the 7mm-08 if I were you, as you already own a .300 mag.

RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
I bought my first .280 Rem. around 1963 and hunted with it for years. I then moved "up" to a 7mm Mag and also hunted with it for many years. I've now moved to the 7mm-08, and find it much more pleasant to carry and shoot. Most game taken with any of these were whitetail and groundhogs. I have loaded for them all,and settle on what the individual rifle likes to shoot the best with respectable velocity.
As others have said here already, flip a coin, or choose between the long action or short. Either one will kill deer-sized game quickly and cleanly. I'm sure you will enjoy whichever you choose............ |
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
As BC said, the main difference is the length of the action. However the 280 is a bit more versitile and will handle the heavies 284 bullets a little better. Either is great for game up to and including elk out to 300 yards. The 280 will give you another 50 yards or so. I have owned several of each.

RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
I would go with the 7mm-08 because with the 280 you will kill any deer out there but you are limited to what you can drop with it. The 7mm-08 on the other hand is a .308 cal cut down to a 7mm bullet, so you will get the power of a 308 pushing on as lighter 7mm bullet wich means more fps equals more ke equals further shots equals better knock down. They both are good guns so its totally up to you but I say 7mm-08

RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
Deerhunter, you do realize the 280 shoots the same bullet but with around 100fps faster performance than the 7mm-08?
|
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
Yeah. The 7mm-08 is a necked down 308 while the 280 is a necked down 30-06 case. Both shoot the same bullet, 284 diameter.
|
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
Sort of the same ol argument...30.06 vs. 308. Flip a coin and be happy...lol.
|
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
Easy solution, BUY BOTH!!!

RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
At last! A voice of reason :D

RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
Hey guys....no offense but the 280 shoots the same bullet 200 feet per second faster that a 7mm-08......Shoot the 7MM Mauser is 100 feet per second faster.....as a matter of fact, the 7mm-08 is the biggest underachiever of all the 7mm cartridges. If you are all wrapped up in moving the bolt 1/4 inch less, then go for it. For me. the 280 clearly shoots faster and faster means flatter and flatter means superior. If Jack O were still alive, he would trade in all his 270's for a 280 Rem in a flash. IMHO and regards, Rick.

RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
BITE YOUR TONGUE.!!!! Jack would never turn on the 270.:D.
Really though, Jim Carmicheal said that when he took over from O'Connor, the first thing Jack told him was to not get himself locked into supporting a single caliber over all others. Jack liked the 7X57 and the 375 H&H as well. However when he recommended anything other than the 270, people would yell traitor!!!!;) I have a lot of hours in with the 270 and 280 both. If I had to pick one, the 280 would probably be it. However the 270 has earned its reputation on game around the world. Muchof itThanks of Old Jack. |
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
7mm08 will do it for you and not much recoil but some.
|
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
The 280 is faster but I have yet to see a reloading manual list a 7x57 load thats faster. I could be wrong..but I havent seen it. Even with a slightly larger case...is it because of pressure or what?
|
RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
Both are great cartridges but my vote would be for the 7 mm-08 because of less recoil and the short action. That would be my personal preference. As previously mentioned just flip a coin...

RE: 7mm-08 or 280 Rem
As suggested when you flip that coin you should know that if it lands on edge it means you must get a 7MM Mauser.
The 280 Remington (along with the 30-06) is among a select few cartridges that can adequately handle all the worlds big game from pronghorns to eland with a light weight rifle. DG excepted of course. The advantage of a short action is slight to nonexistant IMO but the advantage of being capable of driving a 175 grain bullet at very respectable speeds falls in favor of the 280 remington. In 1903 when the 30-03 was developed for the military, had they opted for the .284 diameter instead of the .308 diameter bullet there would not be any where near the number of 30-06 rifles in the world. There would be no need for them at all. The .28-06 would be the world's leading cartridge. Today we call it the 280 Remington. |
