7 mm Magnums vs the 300 Magnums
I really wonder if the market is saturated with 300 magnums in the US.
Just to kick around... what do they have to offer compared to the 7's... especially in light of modern .284 bullets and their ballistic coeffecients? For those of you that use both, I wondering what takes you to the decision to use one over the other? Or, as the English said, "Did God give Americans the .30 caliber?" |
RE: 7 mm Magnums vs the 300 Magnums
when it comes to the .30 cal verses the 7 MM you flip a coin and go hunting.
Both are eminently powerful and long ranged and will handle big game easily. That said so will the .30-06 and the .280 Rem. |

The 300s offer more energy and more recoil. Both do a great job on game up to and including elk and moose.

My STW kicks less with with a 160gr bullet than a 300win mag with a 180gr I think. |

RE: 7 mm Magnums vs the 300 Magnums
An sage old elk hunter told me about thirty years ago "if it wasn't for the recoil, everyone would hunt with a .300 magnum".

RE: 7 mm Magnums vs the 300 Magnums
It was no accident that there are so many 30 caliber options. The 30 has always been an all american caliber. The 7mm is so european.[:'(]:D.
Versitility is the reason that the 30 is popular with bullets from 100 to 250 grains, and velocities from 100 to near 4000 fps, there is not much that it won't do. You can disagree if you ,but recoil wise ,I would much rather shoot a 300 Win Mag than a 7MM Rem. Mag. Thats after owning three 300 Mags and five 7MM Remington Mags. The most pleasant one to shoot was the 300 Win Mag in the 700 Classic. The most painful was a 7MM Rem mag in the 110 Savage. Of course we are talking felt recoil which is all that counts for me.;) |
RE: 7 mm Magnums vs the 300 Magnums
As far as recoil goes, the weight and stock type have a lot to do with what you feel! I've got a .308 that has more "felt recoil," than my 7MM RM.
