300 WSM
 

Lookin to purchase a new 300 WSM in either a Remington 700 XCR or a model 7 CDL or the model 700 LSS which would you get or would you go with a different brandI like the stainless barrel and wood stock but also like the compactness of the model 7all help would be grateful thanks for your help.

Personally I wouldn't restrict any magnum to a compact rifle like the model 7. They are better suited, IMO, to rounds like the 308, 7mm-08, etc. The 300 WSM isn't even available int the model 7.

It's also not available int he CDL.

It is available in the XCR, SPS, and LSS.

Unless you will be reguarly hunting in conditions like the North West coastal areas, Alaska, etc... the XCR really isn't of much benefit.

I like the LSS but I hate the shiny finish that Remington uses on this rifle.

I'd probably go with the SPS if I were to go with Remington and the WSM.


Having said that there is a huge number of other rifles that are chambered for the 300 WSM that I would choose over the three Remingtons.

I would take a serious look at a Howa with their JRS classic and JRS thumbhole or a Weatherby vanguard (same basic rifle as Howa).

Tikka
Ruger
Browning
Winchester
and many others

The 300 wsm IS available in the mod 7 CDL Mag. Weighing in at 7 3/8's but it does have an r3 pad although I suspect it would still kick fairly judiciously. If you can stand the recoil it would be a nice package. The LSS would be nice but recoil similar to the mod 7 as well...all good choices. The sps models I have been around have all been great shooter and have heard good reports about the LSS models as well.

SPS would get my vote. Strong, accurate and very reasonable price.

I still don't think the model 7 is a good magnum cartridge platform though.

If they put it in the 700 CDL with a 24 inch barrel it would get my vote.
