It is a device that you put on the end of a barrel to reduce the recoil of a rifle. It has many holes that direct the gas coming from the barrel out to the side so that the gas is not all pushing straight backwards and thus creating recoil. Simple as that.

This is a muzzle brake.




It is screwed on the end of your barrel after the barrel has been threaded. When the high velocity gasses from the burning gun powder reach the brake they make contact with all of the holes, which are usually at 90 degree or more in relation to the bore, and vent out to the sides and pull the rifle foward thus reducing recoil. Keep in mind that along with the gasses being vented to the side and rearward so too is the noise.

One of the things I love about the internet is that it allows me to effectively comunicate with other firearms enthusiasts without having to work around the ringing sensation I have in my ears 24/7. This started right around the time I began to use muzzle brakes . . . . . .

muzzle breaks yea they should be legal they make the gun so loud you could shoot in NYC and i would hear it in Texas. They just reduce the felt recoil and keep the barrel from jumping as much. I wouldnt suggest one cause A: you will co deaf B. you will shoot at first light/dusk and lose night vision for about 5min cause the muzzle flash is also amplified
