It's a fabulous whitetail cartridge. It's, by all practical means, the same thing as a 30-06.

It's a terrific whitetail cartridge, and you have a virtually endlessvariety ofbullet types to choose from. As the others mentioned, it's very similar ballistically to the .30-06; you might lose 100 fps with the .308, but the deer won't know the difference.

Its a great gun for north american game. My outfitter in Sask says that he hunts everything in Canada with his 308. I have owned at least one for 30 years or so. Nothing beats it for deer hunting and its capable of taking elk and moose as well.. Use a 150 grain bullet for deer and the 180 for moose and elk.

The 308 is slightly less powerful than the 30-06,but tends to be slightly more accurate on average. It is large enough for anything that doesn't bite on this continent.

I would go as far as to say that it is the best white tail cartridge. Lets face it, all modern and older cartridges will take white tail deer. However, the .308 is cheap to shoot and there are lots of military surplus ammo supplies still out there. It also has very light in the recoil department.
