Looking for an inertia shotgun, what's my options???

I'm looking at inertia shotguns. The only manufactures I can find are Benelli, Franchi, and Stoeger. I know Benelli is the best, but costs an arm and a leg. I'm interested in the Franchi, but can't get much input. And I haven't heard much about the Stoeger. And I'm really wondering what's the difference in all these, other than added features, since they're all owned by Beretta.
Are there any other manufacture's that make inertia shotys? Also, do any inertia shotguns have a magazine cutoff? What's your guy's experience with reliability, ruggedness, etc.? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

the inertia driven design is a benelli pantent and only companies licsensed by benelli can use the inertia design. Benelli, stoeger, and franchi are the only guns that have the inertia system. i know its slim pickins but its just the way it is good luck.

I believe the old Browning a-5's were inertia driven.

A5's were a long recoil design where the barrel and all recoiled with the gun.

Beretta also made an inertia operated gun but I can't remember the model at this time.

I can't remember if it was Beretta's 'Pintail', or the 3901 (perhaps that is the same gun) but if memory serves me correctly that was inertia operated.

Also Heckler and Koch made an inertia operated shotgun a number of years ago.

I haven't used an inertia shotgun but, don't they have more felt recoil than a gas operated auto?

I've heard they have more recoil, but I don't know if its true because I've only shot the gas-operated guns. There can't be that big of a difference, though, becuase 12 gauges don't kick that much to begin with IMO.

Yes, they will have a lil more recoil thana gas operated shotgun. Is it enuf to be a burden for the average shooter? No. They do have a sort of a magazine cutoff on them. If you don't push the lil lever on the trigger guard no shells will come out of the magazine.

Check into the Benelli M1 Super 90s, they are coming down in price.

what is the difference between that and the Savage 775A that had the barrel move back when shot?

BB, I believe the Rem. Mod 11 did the same thing.

Long recoil operation
Long recoil operations are found primariy in shotguns, particularly ones based on John M. Browning's Auto-5 action. In a long recoil action, the barrel and bolt recoil all the way back as a unit. Once its rearward movement is absorbed by its recoil spring, the barrel is forced forward by the spring, where it unlocks from the bolt and returns to battery. The bolt, after compressing its own recoil spring, is held in the rearmost position until the barrel returns to battery. At this point, the fired shell has been extracted and ejected, and a new shell has been lifted from the magazine. The bolt is released by the return of the barrel, and is forced closed by its recoil spring. Long recoil operated firearms have a distinct "double recoil" feel to them, the "first recoil" being the halting of the rearward motion of the bolt and barrel, and the "second recoil" being the heavy barrel returning to battery.
Developed in 1900, the long recoil action is over a century old, and dominated the automatic shotgun market for more than half that century, before it was supplanted by new gas operated designs. While Browning halted production of the Auto-5 design in 1999, Frastill makes a long recoil operated shotgunnchi line, the AL-48, which shares both the original Browning action design, and the "humpbacked" appearance of the original Auto-5.

i've got a begium a-5 and it is a great gun, i also own a sbe, both have performed flawlessly, the sbe for 3+ years the a-5 30+, i love the old browning but being that it was a gift and i'd like to keep it i put it up, i really hate that browning abandoned(sp) the recoil operated guns, i bought a gold and had problems, i may be the only one but i'll take a recoil operated gun over a gas gun any day, so far my sbe, it has not disapointed me, but we have had nothing but mild winters for the past 10 years[:@]so it has really not seen the abuse the A-5 has lived thru;)

reb i'll never forget the day i let a buddy of mine shoot my a-5, he came back "man i think your barrel is fixin to fall off"he about fell out when i showed him how it worked;)

Yep!My brother in-law has a Rem Mod 11 hump back which on the center of the barrel about 4" long it is Nurled so you can eject a shell by pulling the barrel back. Keith, did you know that you should turn the bushing and spaceron the recoil spring to change from light loads to heavy loads on the A-5?

Yes the Remington and the Savage are both copies of the Auto-5. They function the same way that the A-5 does.

:D:D:DBB, I was just wondering if Keith knew what I posted in the above post, alsoThe Franchi is still made Inertia Driven.

RE: Looking for an inertia shotgun, what's my options???

;) I know, I was just answering the previous questions.

Just to keep everyone clear the Franchi 48-AL isn't inertia driven. It's long recoil operated exactly like the A-5. THe rest of Franchi's semi auto shotguns are inertia driven shotguns.

Benelli's
Stoeger model 2000
Franchi I-12 & (712 & 720 I think)
H&K made one (same as Benelli SBE)
Beretta made one (don't remember the model) Beretta owns Benelli.

Just a little note about the inertia driven guns. They require recoil in order to operate. A 1-1/8th ounce 3 dram, 2.75" shell has just enough recoil to make the whole system work properly if you cowboy up and stick your shoulder into the gun.

If you install a mercury recoil reducer in the stock of one of these guns it will not cycle these light loads. You will have to use high brass 1.75" shells at a minimum.

Hey thanks for the info. I thought they were all made in Inertia Driven Action. DD, have you had much experience with the 48-AL?Are they made with alot of alloy?

whoops[:-],nope didn't know that, gun didn't come with a manual, its a hand-me-down:Dbut i don't ever remember having any trouble with it, you could take it to a mudhole and it would still function properly, i don't think i have shot a box thru it in the last 10 years, it sure is purdy now though

Keith, if you remove the tube nut that holds the fore end piece, look in side the fore endpiece and there should be a paper glued to it with the instructions on how to placed them for Heavy& Lite loads.

Here you go Keith, the A-5 Manuel. Figure 9 and 10 show you how to place the friction ring.:)

I have a Benelli M2 that recieved as a gift from a pal. I love mine, I just dont get to shoot it enough. Yeah, 1100 bucks can make you cringe but the recoil wont. Gosh, If I didnt recieve it as a gift I would probably be shooting something else, but that is only from the standpoint of price. I wouldnt trade it. EJ

Dang EJ, I need your friends. I'm lucky to just geta "Happy Birthday" from my friends, let alone a $1100 gun.

If your only needing a 3" chambered inertia shotgun I'd recommend you take a good look and try out a friends Benelli M1 Super 90. I've had one for about 5 years and think it's the best shotgun for all around bird hunting I've used. It operates consistently without problems. I find the recoil minimal.
3 1/2 Benelli Super Black Eagle is a slightly different design of the receiver. But it too is a fine shotgun.

RE: Looking for an inertia shotgun, what's my options???

Look around for a Beretta Pintail. Benelli inertia design, tough finishes on barrel and stock, super easy to clean, will still shoot the light loads and can be bought pretty cheap in some cases. If they were available in left-hand models, I would have kept mine and not spent the big $$$ on my Benelli LH SBE.

IF PRICE IS AN ISSUE, I BELIEVE THE STOEGERS HAVE THE SAME PARTS AS A BENELLI AND ARE CHEAPER PRICE WISE. A GUY I WORK WITH COMPARED IT TO THE SAVAGE AND STEVENS RELATIONSHIP. IF YOU GET WHAT I AM SAYING.
