Soothing words for the spouse?
Ok i did something today that i am going to pay for in two ways. i ordered a scope for my model seven ss cause i took the burris FFII off of it and put it on my 700 ss-dm 25-06. and yeah i had an old trashco laying around but i just can't put that on my 308. sooooo i called my distributor ( i buy through my uncles FFL) and just ordered a leupold vxII 3x9x50 matte.
whewwww i hadn't told her yet. but hunting seasons close and all the guns in my arsenal have got to be up to par! What would you all say? you know to avoid the skillet torpedo! SOUTH ARKANSAS REBEL |

RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
Ive been in that boat all to many times! But a man has to buy what a man needs right!? My wife isnt all to happy when she "finds" out what I bought! But...she always gets over it with time! Im trying to come up with a way right now to pick up one of Hoyts new 2003 bows, being I just bought a new Hoyt in 2002 this one is going to be a tough one to pull! I always figure a few nights on the sofa is worth a new toy!

RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
Been married 28 years to the same gal and through practice I've learned that a dozen roses or even a small set of "everyday wear" earings given a couple of days before I bring a new toy home (i.e. scope, rifle, fishing rod, etc) has a tremendous equalizing power that can turn the most "penny pinching" spouse into a snuggle bunny.
For true psychological martial warfare, on one occasion I went out and bought a $300 deer stand, let it set in the living room a couple of days, voicing my concerns about it's price, was it too much, not good enough, etc. Third day, I took it back and got a refund...told the wife I took it back and she scolded me for taking it back. When the new Ruger 1-B showed up a few days later...not a peep and snuggle factor remained high. Bottomline: know the right strokes to make and make smooth plays. Soarkrebel, Don't worry about it. I'm sure you've been in the dog house many times before.Roses, going out to dinner or a nice dress seems to work wonders. You can pull anything off if you use a little tack.I look back and realize how lucky I am not having these headaches anymore..Since you'll be in trouble already you might as well buy the Treelounge you've been wanting.Give her really something to complain about, not just little petty stuff. Suggest the negative to positive close. I shouldn't have done this should I? List all the reasons you shouldn't. Then she can't yell them at you. And if you really want to put the cherry on the sundae, put pepper around your eyes first and CRY in her presence "over" it. They can't stand it. Maternal instinct takes over. Honest.

RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
My fiance' handles the finances. I let her do her thing with makeup. You think guns are expensive. I always tell her prior to making large purchases. She supports my hunting habits. She just bought me a Ruger 454 casull.
But rule #1 is, If mommas not happy ain't nobody happy! |
RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
Whewww lots of folks have been there!
Chipola after 14 years of marital bliss i always get uhhh tense when i tell her. she says my habits are to expensive. And i had the house all clean last night , i was using child labor! They got to earn there keep. Hummm ruger my old cyber buddy is that how you ended up big D'ed. just joking now ffw. no tree lounge this year. i am waiting on you to get in a tight.you got two! RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
Hey there soarkrebel. Advice from red strobes' better half...
with it being so close to Christmas and all, I say tell her how much you'd really like this as a Christmas gift, BUUUTTT you really NEEED it now for hunting and you found it on a great sale! (we women just can't resist a great sale) Then do something that men have a real problem with and listen! Listen to what she has been wanting that may not really be necessary and she will put off buying for herself. Go out, be a darling and buy it for her. Tah dah... no skillet torpedo. |
RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
red strobes( you a fire man?) thats a good one ! let me tell a little story.
OH back in 1988 we were on our first christmas married. so old bubba rebel me was out in k mart just shopping . i wanted a rem 870 to shoot skeet with the guys in my unit in the army. so kmart had a great deal on a rem 870 wingmaster. like 300 bucks. so old dummy me goes and puts it on layaway. think i have done something great , got her a gift to give me i would really want. so i go home and break this enlightening thought to her. MAN SMOKE WAS ROLLING!!! she blew up like a ton of c4. it wasn't right to pick out your own gift thats something the giving party does. it went on for hours . i said a few choice words and told her i would just go get the gun . i could have paid for it on the spot no problem . but i just thought.( thats what i got for thinking) well the next day she went and got the gun while i was at work. i didnt know this and went there after work and was shocked when they told me it had been picked up. Dummy mistake #2 . i asked her about it. here we went again . i got the gun that night but didn't do that again. Now i just say i bought MYSELF a present! OH and nice gifts for her. last year i bought her a pair of diamond ear rings set in white gold . very nice ! worth oh about 1500 bucks. i got a deal on them, trust me . she lost one of them! Dummy mistake #3 i made the statement i never lost a gun. whoa the fires on!! I am going to learn someday to keep my mouth shut! but it's fun to spice up a marriage. you know making up?? And if she knew i was writing this on cyber world ...SHAZAM mistake #4 BOOM!!! SOUTH ARKANSAS REBEL |

She has some very good points. i got the jest she has heard some good ones from you red strobes. you must be a smoothie! She sounded like my wife with that listen thing. (deep sigh) When is the big date? marriage isn't really all that bad i have absolutely no regrets. and tell your better half i said that. i let my better half know it everyday. it's just the look i get when i tell her i bought more gun stuff! like this ! RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
We were just talking about getting her logged on. She does enjoy going hunting. In fact she sold her 30/06 to pay off her wedding dress. April 26 2003 is the big day. We just got back from Arkansas. The in-laws have 400 acres between Fayetteville and Harrison. Lots of turkey and deer up there. White tails are alot bigger than the antlered poodles we have in California.
The fiance' says thank you for the warm welcome. |
RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
I think she'll find most folks on here are pretty decent.
Is she from harrison? nice country up there. i live outside hot springs but my blood is from ouachita county. My wife is from colorado and it took me 10 years to get her to eat deer. won't hunt them. i guess thats best cause if she did i would have to stay home with the kids. you know you have good reason to buy a gun later to replace her's. now we men must be concerned about our wives armament.just a thought. good luck and always take her advice ,or at least act like you did! i think i will take my place on my half of the bed.later. SOUTH ARKANSAS REBEL |
RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
soarkrebel: funny you should say it took you 10 years to get your wife to eat venision...Thats about what it took for me also to get my wife to eat deer! And NOW all the CWD crap in Wisconsin has her so bent, that she wont eat it again nor wants the kids to eat it! And I hunt 4 hours north of where the CWD is(for now!??) I doubt there will be any hope of "retraining" my wife to eat venision again!

I'm on my second wife because the first one had no sense of humor among other things...I now tell my 2nd wife 2 things: 1) I earned my spending money so i'll spend it in any way I want no matter what teh cost, if I want it i'll buy it & 2) i've been buying toys long before I met you & i'll be buying toys long after you're gone!!!! She understands...like I told her when we first started dating seriously...next to hunting, fishing & my dog, she'll come first!!!!!!!!!!! Brampton Mike

RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
I hope this isn't a Canadian thing, but I agree with Brampton Mike. You have to have your priorities and spell them out first. I'm not married but I've seen enough of my friends spend time on the sofa for stupid things that I already know to buy the sofa myself(so its comfortable) and ensure the TV is twice as large there then in the bedroom.
What I would like to know is what woman have against Hunting. The last two girls (women) I was seeing spun a bearing when they found out I hunted. Thus the reason they were the last two girls. 340 PS: I've also learned that flowers don't always work (assumed quilt associated with them), when jewellery won't work (like with a big purchase) a trip or vacation is the ticket. |
RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
You canadian guys kill me!
You think us american men are whooped? nah! just try to be considerate. being that marriage is a partnership ,much like a business, i feel finances should be discussed . equally. you know $327.00 isn't that much money. but when you have kids and all money should be watched. i used to blow lots of money before kids never worried. kids change things. i guess if i made $250,000 a year i would ease up but if i made that much i would live like i made that much so i would probably have to prioritize like i do now. My wife has nothing against hunting. she doesn't hunt but never has said anything negative about my hunting or my introduceing our son to it. there are those that don't like hunting but i am not married to them. 340 you just must attract those nuts! I believe that i said " till death to us part" what part of that do some people not understand? I was sure about who i was marrying and knew who she was. why ? because i was going to stand in the church ,in front of our families and friends, and take oath to her and god that i would spend the rest of our lives togather. We were both mature enough and dedicated enough to uphold these vows and understood the power of them. we understood that marriage is work and buddy is it. to make one work you have to be 50/50, understanding ,willing to bend sometimes and not to change who you are because if that is wanted you should have caught that before you joined into the union. I don't threaten divorce if she doesn't want me to do something ,i usually will think about and if i really want whatever it is i tell her what i decided and she usually will go along. and that goes vice versa. I just hate the looks after i spend money on guns. i will put it this way i have a few guns(over 40)and i will have more but the look when i do is just killer! SOUTH ARKANSAS REBEL |

RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
I get in the same situation all the time. Right now I have a K98 and a Romanian M-44 in parts hiding in various areas of my workshop and garage. I have to work on cleaning them up on the sly. I have a few things going or me though: I have quite a few surplus rifles and they all look pretty much the same, she doesn't have an accurate count of how many rifles I have, if she ever makes a connection that there's an extra rifle in the cabinet or in the workshop, I can say "oh, I had that one for a long time."
Roses and diamonds do help. Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms... who's bringing the chips? |
RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
I consider myself quite fortunate. The house and car are paid for. The business covers off the truck. The bills get paid each month. The wife gets everything she needs and most of what she wants and so do I.
However, I must admit she was a little pi**ed off when I wouldn't tell her the combination for my new 30 gun capacity safe. A fellow has to draw the line somewhere. gg. "The instant you start talking about what you'll do if you lose, you have lost." |
RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
OH NO good guy don't give the combo!
My wife has a key to my pistol safe but not the rifle safes.I am very picky about access to those ,ONLY ME!!! She has never asked to be honest and i don't think she wants to know. she realizes how much ...ok i love my guns, there i said it. I LOVE MY GUNS!! so she lets me have my little uh... expensive addiction. She said once it beats gambling, drinking and lots of others . I think i like the anticipation of " the look" it's great!!! RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
Please keep the info coming! I’m 31 and divorced so I have been around a little. I’m dealing with a new girl friend of about 4 months now. We have known each other about 3 years but she did not realize what went into hunting. She is a NJ boardwalk girl that loves the beach. It has been a little hard for her to understand my love of the outdoors and hunting. She had never even touched a gun until dating me, never slept in a tent (we are still working on using the bathroom in the woods), been off roading in a 4wheel drive truck, or realized how expensive a past time hunting is. She knew about my hunting addiction before she started dating me. Her idea is for me to, “shoot it, clean it, cook it, and feed it to me now.” We are now into the third week of a 2 and a half-month rifle season and she does not like it a bit. I’m back in school for a second degree, so I’m able to hunt every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Of course she thinks that is enough. She is a schoolteacher and wants to spend the weekends with me. How do I explain Friday evening and all day Saturday hunting to her? Oh, sometimes on Sunday as well? The Rut is about to start, HELP PLEASE!

RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
Mello I have a used pair of Reebok's for rent for a very reasonable fee.All jokes aside. You have to decide if you can adjust to her life style? Hunting is a small part of the year. If she can't accept that you are going to spend your free time doing what you look forward to all year, then it's time for her to move on.If you're having these problems already it has to get worse as your relationship progresses.I've been there and done that. Now's the time to nip it in the bud. There are allot of ladies who enjoy the outdoors and would be glad to share time with you and the great outdoors.Ruger Redhawk

Mello
From one who has been married over 40 yrs I can only say that regardless how you do it, you must get the "hunting" understanding firmly in place. It has to be a matter of fact - a non debatable issue. Be fair with her the rest of the year but be firm about the hunting priority during hunting season(s). That way she knows what's coming and accepts it and you'll enjoy it all the more. As men we're entitled to "no hassle hunting". Good Luck. gg. "The instant you start talking about what you'll do if you lose, you have lost." |
RE: Soothing words for the spouse?
Ruger ,hunting a small part of the year? it's year round for me! my wife has never had any objection to me hunting she just gets a little ticked cause i think about it year round. she says there is more to life than hunting. i say WHAT?
she just gets upset cause i have so many guns and can only shoot one at a time.she can't understand why i need so many. i guess i am an addict! SOUTH ARKANSAS REBEL |

Soarkrebel, I stand corrected. I meant Deer season is such a small part of the year. The varmint hunting in the off season goes without saying.I have to agree with GG.He sounds like with over 40 years of being married he's has it down pat.Can you really have to many guns?I personally don't think so.Most ladies just don't have their priorities in proper order. They just Can't Understand Normal Thinking.Ruger Redhawk

I said NO just the scope honey. she said "oh". hehe she didn't get mad at all. i was a little disappointed i expect a little upset. women i'll never figure them out !
