remington model 742,760,6,4,7400,7600ect.

I have been looking frantically for any information on the fact of remington model 742's,760's ....ect,ect being factory tapped or not. I have ordered schematics of the 7400,7600, and have found the schematics of the 742 and 760 on the internet. The schematics show that they all had (4) screws on the top of the reciever called (dummy screws) And I am having a hard time believing that all model 742's, 760's, 7600's, and 7400's were factory tapped, because I have seen models of these at gun shows that did not have any screws in the top of the reciever.

How do I find out which models originally were tapped and which ones were not?

I have not seen the really old models of these guns but in the last thirty years or so worth of them, I have never seen one that was not tapped for scope bases. I have had four over the years and they were all drilled and tapped.

I bought a M742 in 1970 and a friend has a M760 that's older and they're both tapped for scope mounts.

I bought my 760 from my father, he purchased the gun new in 1966. The gun was drilled and tapped for a scope when he bought it. It is one sweet 30.06 rifle, much better craftsmanship than the 7600.

I would bet that it does not shoot any better than the new ones. I have had the older ones and the newer ones. When it comes to shooting, they all shoot very well.

I have a 742 that my Dad purchased brand new in 1961. It is drilled and tapped from the factory.
