Savage or Winchester

I am looking to purchase a Savage or Winchester 270. The dealer in my area wants $365 for a stainless steel model 11 Savage and $625 for a stainless Winchester model 70. Is the Winchester worth $260 more dollars. I am going to be using the gun for deer and antilope hunting but this will be my primary rifle so I want to buy a rifle that will hold up for years.

Thanks for any input you may have.

I have 3 Savage rifles. All have been through pretty much everything you can put a rifle through with use, not abuse, and all 3 function flawlessly and are tack drivers. Personally I can't see paying more money for anything else.

Just a suggestion, but I would buy the Savage and put the extra money into a HIGH QUALITY scope.

The Savage is a quality rifle, a great value for the money and one of the most accurate production rifles made. The Winchester will be nicer in the fit and finish and fancy department. The suggestion to get the Savage and put the extra money towards a good scope is excellent advice. A rifle is only as good as its scope. The Savage deserves a good scope to maximize its accuracy potential.

Interesting Observation Barnes X...what about the controlled round feed, field strippable bolt, trigger that can be simply tuned and is superior in every way not to mention a 3 pos wing safety and a real solid steel floorplate and a gun that doesn't feel like a 2x4 in your hands ? Just my 2 cents

I'd choose the Winchester, it's got arguably the best action ever made, good fit and finish, and a great trigger assembly. Yes it's worth the extra money, you always pay more for quality. I don't like the design of the Savage action, the length, or quality, not to mention it's just plain ugly.

You get what you pay for is the bottom line.

The M70 with the pre-64-type action is the classic choice, but if you are just seking a hunting rifle, I don't believe it is worth $260.00 more than the Savage. I agree. Get the savage and use the remaining money for a 2X-7X Leupold Vari-X II!
