New Guns
I am looking to get a new 12 gauge. The one I have been using was my Grandpa's before my Dad was born. It's a Winchester pump-action. I'm not sure what model it is. Can anybody reccomend a gun that would shoot like it does? The only newer ones I've used are brownings and I don't like the way they feel. They just don't sit right on my shoulder.
I'm also looking to get a 30-06, a .22, and a smooth-bore .22 (not all at once). I'm not looking to go broke, but I'd like to buy new if possible. Any recommendations? If they all felt & fired like that old Winchester 12 gauge, I'd be a happy camper. |
RE: New Guns
Remington 870 Super Magnum Combo. Will cover all your shotgunning needs. Rugged and reliable. Good luck with your search;).

RE: New Guns
My Hunting guide (for upland birds anyway), and his colleagues all swear by the browning BPS pump shotgun. They say it is probably the best pump on the market. Not cheap though.
I have always liked the Ithica model 37. You can still find new ones even though they went out of bis. Also not cheap. The remington 870 wingmaster is a great gun and nicely appointed but also not cheap. The remington 870 express is an awful lot of shotgun for the money. You can get the 2 3/4 inch model for around 200 bucks and I think the 3 inch model is abdout 50 bucks more. And lastly this might be the time to buy a Winchester 1300 pump while you can stll get them made in the USA okcmco |
RE: New Guns
My guess is that your Grandpa's gun was a Winchester Model 12.
Hard to find a gun that will equal it! I do like the Browning BPS as well. The BPS has bottom eject and a thumb safety which I think are nice features |
RE: New Guns
Check out the Benelli Nova. Great gunsthey are already chambered for 3 1/2 loads you cant go wrong. I would take Benelli but also Remington is a good gun for the price.

RE: New Guns
Thanks for the advice. I've never used a gun with bottom eject. What is the advantage of that? I like the idea of a thumb safety. I still find myself looking when I use the one on the trigger guard.

RE: New Guns
Mossbergs have a thumb safty as do most double barrels. I assume the Browning does do by the way you post sounds. i don't know much about those but I am sure they are a good gun...the only advantage to a bottom eject I can see would be for left hand shooters....However I shoot long guns left handed and I have never had a problem with the right side ejectiors. I have a nova and with a little know how you can change the safety over to a lefty pretty easy.

RE: New Guns
bottom eject will work for lefties. Another benifit is there are no emptyshells in your vision to distract you
