.300 ULTRA MAG

I went to order a .300 UM from Browning and found that they did not make one. What manufacturer would you recomend, and how much would one cost?

Thanks for the info.

Browning makes a 300WSM. Which is a short magnum.

I would say go with one of remingtons 700's you can get them in many different models. Savage makes one and I think sako makes one still.Theres a m700 lss 300 rum in the classifieds on this site might be worth looking at

Gander mountain helped me get my Ultra mag, it was remington made and I believed that it set me back about $639.00 the only thing was that I had to wait a little bit because the store didn't have one in stock. They had to send to Wisconsin to get it and they told me that there were only 4 in all their stores. But when I finally did get it I was happy... I hope you find what you are looking for. And I hope that if you can't find one in your area that you have a store around you that will assist you in getting one. Best of luck:)

how much more brutal is the recoil from the 300 rum than a 30.06?

The 30-06 with a 180 grain bullet has 20.3 lbs of recoil. The Rum with a 180 grain bullet has 32.5 lbs of recoil. This gives you an idea of what to expect. The felt recoil is another matter and depends on many things probably mostly how the rifle fits you. However I have friends that own 300 RUM and when they are being honest, they don't like to shoot the rifle any more than they have to. As if they had to.:D

It would work well for anyone considering any of the big Magnums to try to find one to shoot before they buy one. Shoot twenty shots off the bench and see if you enjoy shooting it. If you don't then why buy one when the 300 Win Mag will accomplish the same kind of game getting ability. When I sold guns, I had many guys trade in the hard kickers after giving them a good try. Generally speaking they went back to the rifles they used befroe to take the same game. Rifles like the 270/280/30-06.

I have shot tons of rifles and in truth, anything above the 300 Win Mag is no joy for me to shoot. I no longer can even shoot that one with mu bad shoulder. Use what you need but be kind to your shoulder when you can. I wish I would have.;)

Browning did produce the 300 RUM for a couple of years in the Stainless & Composite Stalker. The only way you will get one is on the used market and there aren't that many to be found.

A Remington Model 700, or Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless Rifle. Good luck.
