Hunting Handgun?
 

Is there anything that could be suggested for a 14 year old? I would use it for plinking and deer hunting, I was thinking about looking at a 357 or 44Mag...I could use a 38Specialor 45 Colt for cheap shooting then more powerful stuff for deer. I would mostly useit along with my 7mm, this way when I go through woods I won't have such a cumbersome gun to use at close range. Thanks for anyreplies.

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask, what models should I look at, I have fairly smallish hands-not quite adult size.

Try some on for size at a good gun shop. Some that have ranges will let you shoot some of the available models. I would suggest a Ruger Blackhawk in 44 Mag. You could shoot 44 Speciak loads for practice. Another choice in the Blackhawk is the one in 45 Long Colt with a 45 ACP cylinder. I hade a couple of those over the years. Check to see if 45 Long Colt is legal for big game in your area. It has plenty of WHOP in the Blackhawk in which it can be loaded to NEAR 44 Mag levels.

Honestly I would look at a Ruger super redhawk chambered in the 454 Cassul.

Even though the Cassul is a real power house of a round the beauty of it is you can shoot 45 colts, which recoil very minimaly more than a 45 ACP, out of the same cylinder and as you grow and progresse you can step into the lighter 454 cassul loads and on up the the real heavy stuff the older you get.

Another excelent choice would be a S&W or Ruger chambered in the 44 Rem mag. Same thing about the 44 special loads applys here as it does to the 45 colt above.

I to would vote for the ruger super red hawk In a 44mag. That would be an excellent starter handgun.I would use the 44 special to start with to get use to the big bang and not spook you off.Good luck

What would these compare recoil-wise to a .38 Special...not a real powerhouse but that's all of shot, the loads were supposedly "hunting ones", I didn't think they kicked.

I don't know where you live, but the first thing you need to do is check the local regs. I know our state specifies things like diameter of caliber, foot pounds at 100 yards, and even minimum length of cartridge.

Then get a .44 mag. At leasta 6" barrel.
