Which Gun to Go with
I'm looking to get a new Deer Hunting Gun. The gun will be mainly used for white-tails here in WI where a long shot for me would be 150 yards. I do have plans to go out west to try for Elk and Mule deer. Can I get buy with buying one gun for both needs. Also, I prefer a bolt action and would like to get a bolt action with a clip. How about a compostite stock with a stainless steel barrel? Any help here?

RE: Which Gun to Go with
How about a Remington 700 BDL SS DM. It is a bolt action stainless rifle with a detachable box magazine. Remington chambers it for .270 Win, .280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, 30-06 and .300 Win Mag. Any of these cartridges would be a great choice.
Here is a link that will take you to Remington's online catalog page for this model: http://www.remington.com/firearms/ce...e/700bssdm.htm Edited by - RuRu12 on 01/11/2002 10:27:11 |

RE: Which Gun to Go with
I've got a Rem Sendero stainless fluted in 300 Rem ultra mag and love it. very accurate. But if it's mainly for deer i would say go with a 7mm Rem not too much for deer yet not too small for elk. You will apperitiate the energy and flat trajectory when tour looking at a muley from 300yds away.

In my opinion a 30-06.

RE: Which Gun to Go with
Can't go wrong with the Remington 700. I'd go with .243, 7mm Magmum, .270.

RE: Which Gun to Go with
I would go with the .270 , 30-06 or 7mm mag. Ruger makes a "All Weather model" M-77 and lots of calibers to choose from.Stainless steel with the synthetic stock. I would recommend the new synthetic stock opposed to the older one.The Remington 700's are also great bolt actions. See which one fits you right and take it from there. Ruger Redhawk

RE: Which Gun to Go with
Either .270, .30-06, or 7mm mag will do you right. I would stay away from the real big guns.

RE: Which Gun to Go with
270 win or a 30-06 ,with the first choice being a 30-06 .
|
RE: Which Gun to Go with
I would go with a remington 700bdl ss dm in either 7mm mag or 300 win mag.Smaller cartridges will kill moose and elk but these two provide a little extra insurance.Which of the two you choose would depend on how sensitive you are to recoil. The 7mm is quite manageable but the bit extra that the 300 provides is a little more than some people are comfortable with.

RE: Which Gun to Go with
There r many nice rifles out there, get the 1 that fits "U" best, try all rifles u can. I like to close my eyes and shoulder the gun, then open eyes to feel a goood fit, as far as calibers go,today with the new bullets and powders u hav lots of deadly options.these bullets that retain 100 percent, u will get pass thru at 300 yds and minimum damage at 20. There is no such thing as to dead. go with the biggest calb. u can handle. on a good hit, heart, lung, neck, any thing will bring it down. U will appreciate the bigger calb. on a BAD hit, it will save u miles and time. A .243 IS A VARMINT GUN.Comon guns4hire

RE: Which Gun to Go with
Browning A-bolt SS Stalker .300win mag. It has removable clip. With boss it has less recoil But more noise. It might be overkill for whitetail. For Elk it would be perfect.

RE: Which Gun to Go with
.308 because if your within 200 yards it'll be no problem.
|
RE: Which Gun to Go with
Although I love the .270, i'd take a 30.06 out for Elk, and definately not a .243.

RE: Which Gun to Go with
You want the gun for deer and trips for elk won't come that often, right? My choice would be a .280. Flat shooter and it can be used for elk when you go! This is a "GREAT" deer caliber and a "GOOD" elk caliber. I like the Remington 700 myself...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Which Gun to Go with
I think the 270 would be great for deer, but would be the bare minimum for elk. 30-06 would be very good for deer or elk. 7mm mag would be even better. The 300 mag & larger have too much recoil for my taste.

RE: Which Gun to Go with
weather warrior, savage has all those features synthetic, detachable mag, tapped, stainless steel and a heck of a lot of calibers to choose from and also there cheap.
