Bore Butter
 

Someone told me that if i treat my guns barrel with bore butter when i clean the barrel it will help maintain the barrel as well as help make it a better shooting gun? I would think that it does help to maintain the barrel, but would it really help the gun shoot better?

I have heard the same (if you are reffering to a ML)... It really should never be used in centerfires/rimfires... Anyway, as a ML bore preservative/cleaner it is what I use...

Answer: C. NONE OF THE ABOVE. Bore Butter is edible. It is better on biscuits than gun bores. Crisco is just as good, but doesn't have the color or smell.

Clean the bore of your muzzleloader (or modern rifle if fired with corrosive ammo) with hot water, and preserve it after thorough drying with Birchwood-Casey SHEATH!!

Bore butter does not displace moisture like a petroleum based product. If there is any moisture left in the barrel the bore butter will seal it against the steel. I think bore butter has a place in muzzle loading but not in centerfire weapons. When I used an inline muzzle loader I used bore butter on the bolt and bottom side of the scope. The fouling would wipe off any area coated with the bore butter.

Bore butter encourages corrosion. Be sure if you use bore butter, it is before shooting to possibly help the projectile slide in the barrel easier, but never leave it in the barrel. As mentioned, it will seal moisture against the steel and eat the snot out of your metal. Ruined the breech end of a really nice Encore by not fully understanding the properties of bore butter. I'll never use it as a protectant.
