Your Opinion Kill Zone

On a large whitetail, if you aim dead center on his chest, and hit dead center, but you could go high or low. How many inches high or low do you feel you can hit a whitetail and be in that kill zone? Im shooting a 300 win mag..Thank You

LOTS OF VARIABLES THERE!! How close? What load? How many ftlbs of energy? What shot angle? You have a high powered rifle not a nuclear device. Close doesn't get it and only counts in hand grenades, horshoes, and global thermonuclear devices. What scares me about some people with magnum loads is they often have more weapon than they can accurately shoot. If you hit him in the eye a 22 rimfire will get it done.

Having said that the old timer that taught me to hunt said to think of the kill zone as about the size of your dinner plate. Its a safe rule. Will he die if you hit him somewhere else? Most likely. I have seen deer shot in the head, neck, lungs, the spine, the ass, the gut. Every shot was fatal. If you like chasing him through the woods hit him most anywhere. A lot of shots will kill him eventually but you may or may not find the animal.

Way back when, I was instructed to effect the cleanest possible kill was to aim at the front shoulder and then move back 2-4" and that will almost guarantee a vital shot. Most people say the vital zone is about the size of a pie plate.

Like the other said the old rule is a pie plate size, basically 6-8". It really don't matter what load you are shooting, hit him in the boiler room, he's done. Take a look at Power link.

Max. Point Blank Range (MPBR) on a deer is 4", so do not let your bullet rise higher than 4" at any time of it's flight, and you will be all right. When your bullet drops more than 4" you will have to compensate. You are right about aiming dead center on his chest. Good luck.
