x40 or x50?
So I've decided that the Ruger M77 MKII is going to be my choice for my next rifle in 30-06. I'm planning on placing a Leupold VX-II on top. The only question is should I get a standard 3x9x40 or pay the extra $50 and get a 3x9x50. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Is it worth the extra doe? (pardon the pun:)) Also, is there anything I'm missing with this decission that would make me reconsider scope or power?
Thanks. |
RE: x40 or x50?
I prefer 40mm scopes because they can be mounted lower which provides a better cheek position on the stock.

RE: x40 or x50?
I could never see much advantage to the 50MM.

RE: x40 or x50?
I agree go with the 40 my leupold is only a 3x9x40 and you could shoot easy way after legal hours with it I think you picked the perfect power though Just something about a 30-06 and a 3x9 like 2 peas in a pod

RE: x40 or x50?
I would go with the 3-9 x 40 mm and save that extra $ 50.00 for something else. I did have the Leupold 3-9 x 50 mm for a short while and even thought it was a good scope with a good field of view the 40mm would sit lower on the rifle and work just as well. As for power the 3-9 is a good choice for that 30-06. Good luck...

RE: x40 or x50?
You might wanna hold off on the Leupold purchase right now. "A lil bird told me" that with some new scopes and technology Leupold is about to release 50mm scopes that you can nearly put on LOW rings!!!
Stay tuned too a ShotShow near you! lol RA ps To answer your question though, no a 50 is NOT an advantage on a 9x. If you were talking about the 4x12 I would recommend the 50. As long as you keep the pupil above 4mm at any given power you will be happy with its twilight performance! |
RE: x40 or x50?
50mm cost more, puts the center farther from the bore and weights more...all for what?
Go 40mm you'll never reap whatever benefits the 50 would give. Just my 2cents, I shoot bushnell banners and a tasco on my 10/22...so what do I know[&:] |
RE: x40 or x50?
I got a Leupold catalog and they have new scope with an "indented" bottom, that kind of hugs the bore. Supposedly now you will be able to have extremely large lenses, I've heard up to 70mm...

RE: x40 or x50?
That may be the ugliest scope I have ever seen. Can't wait to see the price on those.
I have both and dont see much difference between the 2 except the 50 looks a little clearer could just be that 1 scope though. I like the 50 on my Encore since when its mounted I have more room for my thumb to pull hammer not that I couldnt put a 40 higher. I dont think the rings that came with your Ruger(if you got themwith gun) will fit the 50 so youll have to add that into the price. Having both Id save another 100$ to 150$ and buy a Bushnell 3200 or Burris. I think those VX IIs are way overpriced for how they perforn compared to theother 2scopes. |
RE: x40 or x50?
Cabelas as them for $699.99.
|
RE: x40 or x50?
Thats only $125 more than the gun I plan to put it on costs.

RE: x40 or x50?
I think Im done buying Leupolds with prices like that. That feature isnt worth that much. Unless the rest of the scope is that much nicer.
