ORIGINAL: bigiron

moa or minute of angle equals about an inch every 100 yards
I understand this part but how do you relate minutesto a target that is 900+ yards away?

Thanks

Don't know yet about shooting 900yds but what I can say what my GAP 300 wm tactical will do out to 700yds 80 deg,
100 yd zero
from 100 to 300 yd drop is 8 1/2 in
from 300 to 600 yd is 48 1/2 in
from 600 to 700 yd is 24 in (3 1/4" 5rd group at 700yd) TOTAL 79" drop
Black Hills 190gr BTHP
Rem 700 action

According to the Remington Balistic calculator, a 300 win mag shooting the 180 gr scirocco, zeroed at 200 yards will drop 209.61" at 900 yards. And it will have 945 ft-lbs of energy left at that distance.

I don't recommend shooting that far but a 7mm Reming Magnum might be better than 300WM becuase of the bullets effiency.

Thanks everyone for the input. Let me clarify something from the initial post. At the club I belong to, we have a range that goes out to 800 yds. The range is also a spot that the deer like to cross and feed along. The hillside shooting situations (whichis of more interest to me)is probably closer to 500 yds. max. Any shooting at the 700-800 range willmore than likely be target only. I DO NOT take shots at gameunless I feel confident/comfortable w/ making a clean kill.
I am leaning towards the 300 Win. mag., and to keep costs down, I may opt for that barrel for my Encore w/ a Leupold 4.5-14 w/ B/C reticle.

As I said in another thread, the .300rum is an excellent elk killer at 700 yards and beyond. Some of the admirable guys at some of the longrange hunting/shooting forums are getting elk at 1,500 yards with a .338 Lapua mag and even at that yardage, they are delivering 800 or so ft lbs, crashing thru any bone and dropping them.

Ive gotten two past 700 yards with my .300rum and Im still amazed at how potent it is.

I havent messed with a 7mm rum, but from the ballistics I just checked, its right there with the .300winmag. The only holding it back is the choice of factory ammo, and the weights of bullets isnt very heavy. If you reload, that problem goes away. Both offer great B.C. so shoot what youre comfortable with. At the end of the day, thats all that matters.

I love long range shooting, its the most absolute rewarding accomplishment of a person's ability with the knowledge and skill coming together. So that being said I'll break it down in to reality. I have a 300win mag that shoots a 165gr boattail bullet at 3200fps. Even with the velocity it should drop 24 feet at a 1000yds. Have i ever tested on paper no. I have tested it out in the field and as near as i can guess the drop seems close. Can you hit a deer everytime you pull the trigger with your regular hunting rifle at those distances? I would say very few can if at all without a special compensation scope and loading match type ammo.

Most people claim they can hit game at long ranges. I say most have gotten lucky once or twice. I myself limit the range around 500yds to 550yds and in that 50yds is enough to miss at the distance drop is almost doubled every 100yds. If you can keep 3 out of 3 bullets in a 12 inch circle then you have found your max range. Shooting beyond that mark shows lack of respect for the animal. Once you pass the 400yd mark it would be best to have range finder to maximize your shooting ability. No amount of powder or case size will help you shoot better. They shoot a 1000yds at the national matches and do it well and they're using 308's. A well placed shot will always overcome power.

If I were to attempt any truely long range shooting it would be done with one of the .338 caliber super magnums such as the .338 Lapua, .338 Lapua imp, or .338 RUM.

The match grade .338 bullet will yield higher ballistic coefficients that either the 7mm or the .308 diameter bullets and are obviously available in heavier weights. Both of these add up to more retained velocity and energy at all distances, less drop at any given distance and less wind drift at any given distance.

Any of the listed cartridges will prople a 250 grain bullet at or in excess of 3000 fps if hand loaded. Which you would want to do to tweak out the most accuracy from your rifle.

However after saying all this I refer back to Black elk's statement in that all the power in the world will not make up for bad shooting skills. It is up to the shooter to get good with his/ her equipment and posess the skills necessary to make a clean 800 yard shot on an animal.
