Talk a gun smith said that he could bore the chamber out to improve 3030. The difference in SPEED would be 2250fps to as much as 2700fps on 150g bullet.

Also the rifle would still be able to shoot 3030 in a pinch.
That is the way you form your brass also.

Has anyone experience 3030 improved & would you do this???

Don't know if I'd do it...and don't have experience with the 3030 improved. But I believe that if you can fire a 3030 in a 3030imp. chamber....then what you have afterwards is a fireformed 3030improved.

Its a 30-30. Do whatever you want and you still got a 30-30. As is, its good till 200 yds on any deer around and when you consider that you are shooting froman iron sighted gun it don't make much sense. Spend the money on something more worthwhile. Take care.

You might want to do a little ammo research first. I think Hornady is or will be making an extended range 30-30 load that uses a conical shaped plastic tipped bullet for better aerodynamics. A 30-30 improved doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

As long as you handload, and can take advantage of the extra powder space go for it. Good luck.

Heck, none of the "improved" cartridges make any sense to me. I mean if I wanted or needed more power and velocity than "X" cartridge offered then I would simply purchase the next larger cartridge instead.

I agree with nyorange in that the regular 30-30 is plenty enough gun for deer to about 200 yards. With iron sights on this gun what exactly would be the point? Can you shoot these iron sights well enough to take advantage of the extra couple hundred FPS? Which at 200 yards the trajectory differance would only be about 2 or 3 inches.

My first concern is, how long will a Savage 24 last shooting the higher recoiling imp cartridges in it???? Do you realize that after the rechamber, regular 30/30's will have quite a bit velocity LOSS when fired in the imp chamber???? Another thing, once you boost the velicity that much, where will this thing shoot in relation to the sights that were designed for reg 30/30 velocities????

Personally, i'd not do it unless you understand all the above and can live with it too...

Like was said, the std 30/30 is already a decent 200 yard cartridge, and with the Federal 170 grain Nosler load, you have an excelent black bear/deer sized game cartridge!

I have to agree with the others, I see no reason to change what is already a good 200 yard chambering.

I reload for my Marlin 336 30-30 using 150gr Win round nose bullets and 35gr of IMR3031. That load gives me a 1.75" 10 shot group at 100 yards any time Ishoot it. It clocks right at 2500fps and I dropped a nice bodyed young buck this year with it at 160 yards. My gun only has a 20" barrel, with a longer barrel it should be a little faster. I'm looking forward to Hornady's releasing the new pointed bullet mentioned earlier which looks like it could extend the effective range of this old cartridge by up to 100 yards or more.

If you reload for your gun you would not be limited to the standard 30-30 fare. If this is the case you could use whatever pointed/boat tail design bullet you want to achieve the desired results using the chamber you already have. If you don't reload, I would put theupgrade money into reloading gear instead.

As its a single shot rifle there is no point to using regular 30-30 bullets you could develope a beautiful load using a 130-150 gr. pointed bullet that would bedeadly on deerout to 200 and have a good trajectory too.

Keep in mind even though it's a "single shot", it's still a 30-30 and most of the pointed bullets were designed to work at "higher" velocity than the 30-30 will drive them "especially" at longer distances.

You MUST use a bullet designed to work in the velocity range you are pushing it out of your gun! (no matter what the gun/cartridge or caliber is) "If" you don't, is's the very thing that causes wounded animials to run off to die later!
