RE: 260 . ya or na
dyana, tell us why youare considering the .260?
I have been shooting a Ruger M77 in 6.5mm Swede for the last 6yrs and have no complaints!:) |
RE: 260 . ya or na
well lets see, first for it's flat trajectory 2nd I heard it has a long range because of blistering muzzel speed all with little recoil as Im thinking about a bolt action.

RE: 260 . ya or na
thanks Rebel hog thats a informative article which solidifies everything I'd heard, except for the volocity I though it was faster but with a smaller grain bullet it makes up for it.

RE: 260 . ya or na
dynatec,
I have posted the picture of the moose I took in Alberta in 1995 with the Ruger 6.5mm Swede and 156gr Norma"Alaska" ammo! I have many different calibers and the 6.5mm has betterpenetration than all I have in the safe. As you already readthe article, the 6.5mmSwede just has a little morepower than the .260, but are real close in comparison! |
RE: 260 . ya or na
Once again...you cant hardly go wrong with any of the 6.5's 6.5x55, 260, 264 etc. Good guns! Most manuals show the 260 as faster but I cant see it with the swede being larger in capacity. Must be because of the old Mausers out there in 6.5x55 not having quite the pressure limits as the new ones. Maybe its efficiency..lol..I dont really know. But either will kill deer like the Hammer of Thor :D

RE: 260 . ya or na
Dynatec. You better get to the store before Doe Dumper does if you want a 260.:DIf DD had a santa like RH and ME, he might find one under the Xmas tree. YEAH RIGHT!!.
Like Doe Dumper said. The loads for the 6.5x55 are kept lower because of the old Mauser actions. The 260 has never been chambered in anything but modern actions. ( from the factory anyway) I had a 700 Remington Classic in 6.5x55 and you could load that one to its full potential. Some manuals show modern loads then suggest that loaders of the old Mausers drop a grain or two of powder. I think I am going to put together a 6.5-06 and may go to the Ackly Imp. version. WHY?? I don't know.;) |
RE: 260 . ya or na
From what I've read on it the .260 is a heck of a deer getter. If I didn't have a 270 and a 7-08, I would probably have one of these. It is one of those cartridges that you can start a youngin out with and use forever without any worries.

RE: 260 . ya or na
Thats an excellent way to describe the 260 Bronko.
|
RE: 260 . ya or na
Glad to hear some others that like the .260, 6.5mmSwede and the 7mm-08! I have been using them for 10yrs and would not trade for another. Been using the 6.5mm mostly!:)

RE: 260 . ya or na
I've owned a .260 Rem., a Rrmington 700 LSS Mtn. Rifle for about five years. It is a great light recoiling cartridge even in a lightweight rifle. Accuracy is also very good. I have no problem with velocitiessafely reaching 2750fps using a 129 gr. Hornady Interlock bullet
A great cartridge even though it's popularity is waning! |
RE: 260 . ya or na
thanks for all the feedback guys, that makes me more comfortable with my purchase because I will be aquirering one now I just have to choose which model.:)
|
RE: 260 . ya or na
I own several .270's and a7MM-08; and am still thinking about building a .260 for myself. Will probably go with the Ackley Improved version. When Swift annouced the introduction of a 130 grain Scirocco in this caliber last month, thatkinda pushed me over the edge. . . . .

RE: 260 . ya or na
I have a ruger alweather in 260 rem. I got mine 2 years ago and have killed 2 bucks with it.I also handload the 129 gr hornady sp for mine.I really like the cartridge and will be getting a 260 barrel for my encore come refund time.
|
RE: 260 . ya or na
is the 260 rem a short action or a long action?
my 10 yr old daughter can shoot the 243. is it possible for her to comfortably shoot one of these? |
RE: 260 . ya or na
Yes it is a short action. If she can shoot that 243 comfortably I would almost bet she couldnt tell the difference in recoil with the 260. As others have said, would probably be the only gun she would ever need unless you hunt something that bites back :D
|
RE: 260 . ya or na
The 260rem is the mildest big game cartage around it will kill the biggest deer with the least recoil in the lightest rifle and it's great on pigs too.
I get 3000fps with the 120gr Nosler and 2930fps with the 130gr Hornady's from a little model seven 20' barrel the loads might be a little hot but they work damn well for me ![]() |
RE: 260 . ya or na
the 260 pushes a 120 gr bullet at 2890 fps and a 140gr at 2750fps. the 120 gr bullet drops 19 inches at 300 yds. which isnt that bad for the speed not breaking 3000 fps. hopefully this info will help you some.

RE: 260 . ya or na
I own a Ruger 77 Compact with a 16.5in barrel and Iabsolutely love it. I have harvested 5 deer in Va. and neither of them has run 50 yds.... As for the purchase do it............[:@]

RE: 260 . ya or na
Having a 7mm-08 & 270 WSM, I might just consider the 260 Rem. for my wife incase she picks up the sport of deer hunting...:D
|
RE: 260 . ya or na
Smart thinking right there :D
|
RE: 260 . ya or na
I am a huge fan of the 260 Rem. I think this is possibly the best deer caliber on the planet for shots out to 300 yards. It can be had in a lightweight rifle and will shoot lights out out to 300 yards. You get almost 270 ballistics in a much lighter less recoiling rifle. It is also great if you have a wife, gf or kids that can hunt with it. I have a Rem 700 mountain rifle and an Encore pistol in this caliber and love both of them. Don't et anybody fool you, the 260 can be hot rodded to near 6.5mm Rem Mag or 6.5-284 ballistics all day long. Most factory loads are very conservative anyway. I recently bought a box of Nosler custom loads in 125 grain partition (since Remington decided to quit offering them) that are chronoed at 2975fps, and that's with my 22" barrel.

RE: 260 . ya or na
This caliber, along with the 7MM-08, are absolute little sweethearts. I think I would lean (very slightly) toward the .260 for deer and antelope, and very slightly toward the 7MM-08 for elk and bear - but its really close. If you don't need to shoot beyond 300 yards, this caliber will serve you well.

RE: 260 . ya or na
Amazing what a following the 308 family has. They seem to have tons of fans. I am not enamored with it for deer but the 243 but it is extremely accurate and fun with crows :DI do absolutely love the 7-08 though and the 260 is next on the list.
