Help Me Decide What To Do.....
I've decided that I need another 223 in my arsenal. I used to have 3 of them, now I am down to just 1 and it is a Mini 14, so it is pretty much worthless.
I am trying to decide if I want to build another AR 15 up or go with a bolt gun.
The AR would consist of a RRA NM Lower, 6 position stock, and a 16" upper.
The bolt gun would either be a Browning A-Bolt Varmint or a Tikka T3 Lite.
The scope will be a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40.
It will be used for a general purpose plinker, pickup gun, p-dog gun and 'yote gun. Will bounce around in the truck with me all year, and be shot alot.
Here is a pic of my last AR, I sure do miss it!

How much does it cost to build up one like you had? Why did you get rid of it? I have traded off so darn many good rifles just because I thought I had to try everything else[:@]
I love the Savage Varmit model that I just got. It came into the gun store and I went down and looked at it. Its the Heavy Barrel SS Synthetic Accu-trigger. As you know this on is 270 WSM but it comes in 223 2nd 22-250 as well. Have you thought about the 223 or 243 WSSM? I don't think Savage makes one yet. I would go with the Accu-trigger in 223.

Hey Rammer, if you want another RRA like you had minus the 6 position stock, bipod, and scope I'll sell ya mine cheeper than 1000.00 which is what the gun willcost. Say 760.00. Less than 200 rounds through it.
I like theAR-15 for varmiting, when multiple dogs come out 20 rounds work great.

James - I bought the NM lower for around 275 at the time and the upper for around 475, the A.R.M.S. #22 rings with 1" inserts were about 145, Nikon Buckmaster was 279 and the bipod was around 50. So I had roughly 1200 some odd dollars invested in it without mags. The gun was a tack driver, and I just got the bug one day to sell it to a local guy that really liked it. When I sold it to him (didn't sell the bipod, rings, mags, scope) I took that money and bought another 243 (Tikka T-3 SS, Leupold VX-II 4-12x40) with the money I sold just the rifle to him for.
Crimedog - would u be interested in selling only the lower? I had started an M4 type upper about 2 years ago and I was planning on getting it completed and just buying a lower for the time being.

I would sell the lower but I also have another lower with a 6 position stock without the NM trigger, it has thestandard trigger, I planned to put a JP trigger in it.

The Browning and Tikka would probably be more accurate, but that RRA is so much more fun. After all, you can't put a 30 round mag on a Browning or Tikka. Plus,mostAR15's can shoot 5.56mm and .223 where the Browning and Tikka would be just .223 (yes, they are different. The 5.56mm has slightly more headspace and a longer throat, so shooting it in a .223 chamber can causeover pressures of up to 15,000 psi, and risk a chamber rupture.) I would personally recommend not using a RRA upper though, since they use a Wylde chamber, which is inbetween a .223 and 5.56mm. Most other AR15 manufactures use a 5.56mm chamber, such as Colt, Bushmaster, DPMS, Armalite made after 2001, etc.
P.S. That explanation wasn't directed at you Rammer, since you're probably very knowledgeable on this. I just didn't want someone calling me an idiot because 5.56 and .223 are the same size.

Redhead,
I didn't know that about 5.56 vs 223. I always thought they were the same.I have a bushmaster A1. It should shoot both, right? Which would shoot better in it and why?
Thanks
Tom

statjunk, your Bushmaster should have a 5.56mm chamber, so you're fine. You could just contact Bushmaster, they'd know forsure. 5.56mm and .223 are bothfine to shoot, I personally like the military stuff, since it tends to have better trajectories and higher velocities. But to each their own. If you're not sure though,I'd use .223. This can get confusing because some companies will use 5.56mm terms interchangeably with .223 ammo. I good tipoff if it's 5.56mm is words like: NATO, Q3131, Q3131A, M193, XM193, M855, XM855, M856, SS109, and probably some others. Also, if it's made by Lake City or IMI, it's 5.56mm. Stay away from Olympic ammo, they claim to make 5.56mm, but I've heard nothing but terrible reviews of their ammo. The best website I've found on the matter is....
http://www.ammo-oracle.com/body.htm This can be overkill, since it has so much information.
Also, www.ar15.comhas several forums with avid shooters that are extremely knowledgeable on everything related to AR15's.
Basically, SAAMI came out a few years ago and said never to use 5.56mm cartridge in a .223 chamber because of the overpressures, since it had caused a few chamber ruptures. I'm sure that's still pretty rare, but better safe than sorry.

AR-15's are pretty common.
If I was in your shoes I would send the Mini-14 to Accuracy Rifle systems or Accuracy systems inc and have it tuned and tweeked into a heavy barreled, sub moa, shootin SOB!!!

Many people try to make a Mini 14 shoot by hanging a weight on the barrel but these places rebuild the Ruger!!
