RE: Background chekc for firearms?

you would think that by filling out your full first, middle and last name as well as providing your SSN and your State DL # the FBI could pretty much verify that you are whom you say and pull up any record you may have eh... maybe if it is close to a bad guy they have to dig deeper just to be sure? Or your application has to be forwarded to someone else for further looking into... donno if it becomes more entailed on the FBI end or not... all i know is that when that phone call is made.. there is no messing around... it is business and that is it...
Here in Illionis you have tohave a Firearms Owners Identification Card to own and buy guns and ammo. You apply through the State police who do the background check. When the dealer calls you in, it is to the Illinois state police. He gives them your name, FOID card number, and whether it is a long gun or handgun. In my case, a felon with the same first and last name as well as middle initial throws up a red flag immediately. That is why it is initially declined. Then that info is looked into deeper, and I am verified that I'm not this other guy. It actually doesn't bother me, it means they are some what on the ball in preventing felons from owning guns. And the dealer usually gets the call back within 20 minutes. It is not like it is a matter of days.

ORIGINAL: Koontzy

what all do they check for or look at when doing it???
Thx
Koonzy, they do what is called a "National Agency Check" via computer link to the National Crime Information Center to see if your name, date of birth, Social Security numberis listed in the records ofany Federal, state, or local court or law enforcement agencyas having beenconvicted of anyfelony or domestic violence misdemeanor anywhere in the U.S.

If they don't find your name on such a list, you get to buy the gun. If they DO find your name, sorry about that!!

However, as poorly as many jurisdictions keep such records, it is more likely that a felon would be approved than a completely innocent buyer would be denied! But obviously, this does happen now and then.....

I am still convinced that dangerous criminals usually obtain their firearms some other way than by purchasing them at your local friendly gunshop!
