What should I save for?

I have an NEF rifle, and as you may know, you can buy accessory barrels for it. I had the opportunity to buy a 30-06 barrel a while back and passed, because I was flat broke! Anyway, I'm saving up for a new factory barrel.

Ohio is a shotgun only state for deer, but I want a centerfire rifle. I guess it will be my "what if" barrel... What if I get a chance to hunt in another state for deer, elk, hogs... that sort of thing. Here are my options from NEF:

.30-06
.308
.270
.280
7mm-08
.500 S&W mag.
.243

All these barrels run around $82 except for the .280 which is a little over $100.

.30/'06 or .280 - 280 if you are a handloader. '06 if you have to use factory ammo......

Well if you wouldn't have said elk my pic would be the .243. I would probably go with the .270 myself in that situation. Well I would go with the 243 because I have no desire to hunt elk so the 243 would do everything I would want it to do from varmint to medium/large game.

Eto, for strictly deer, I would go with 7mm-08 for deer and elk, I would go with the .270.

500 S&W would be cool to have and it's good for alot of stuff from deer on up. Probably shoots a little flatter in a rifle too.

Reb, I respect your opinion, but I would like to hear your reasoning on this. The 7mm-08 Rem and 270 Win generate terminal ballistic so similar that no game animal could tell them apart. I feel the 7mm-08 Rem gets sold short too often as just a deer rifle.

Post it?

I used the .270 130gr NP for many years andin 1995 switched to the 6.5mmSwede which has better penertrationthan the 7mm-08 and is .5mm smaller and .5mm larger than the .243. All three are necked down .308's.
