WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
I was looking at a place called cheaper than dirt. Does anyone buy from them if not where do you get your ammo from?
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
I don't shoot enough to buy online. Local gunshop, gander mountain (on the drive between college and home) or wal-mart. Even between the 3 I don't have the selection I'd like...but eh, that's life.
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
Local gunshop, cabela's (have one near me) or if I'm desperate walmart or simular store. I don't buy much of anything on line. I normally don't buy ammo until I need it, so ordering it online would not do me much good.

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
Usually I wait for a sale, then stock up. Dick's sporting goods, Bass pro shops, or Wall-Mart. Stopped in Gander Mountain in on the way to NY hunting at Inlaws from NC, and found some good buys there.:D
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
I reload 99 percent of my own ammo. However when I do buy ammo, I buy most of it at the local Gunshop or Scheels. This year I used the Federal Fusion ammo in my 270 because I didn't have a chance to work up a load. I was so impressed with the Fusion stuff that I think I will buy a case of it with the same lot number and forget reloading for this one. Its not a Prairie dog gun anyway.

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
I have been in cheaper than dirts store in Dfw and online THEY ARE NOT CHEEPER THAN DIRT! I live in a small rural area and order all mine from midway or natchez. there is a place online called able ammo and sometime they have very good prices.
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
I reload everything I use except for my AR-15 stuff (lone wolf .223) I happened to be at a Police indoor shooting range and noticed 2 cases behind the shelf. Being solely a handgun store I asked him who that was for. He said he ordered it for someone who stuck him with it. So he told me if I wanted it he would sell it to me for his cost just to get rid of it. So now I got 1000 rnds of ammo should last me a month or two!!!:D:D
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
i buy quite a bit of bulk ammo. mostly .45 acp, 308,22and .223's. i have found that sportsmansguide is the cheapest place to order from. even with their shipping cost. some places give you free shipping on orders over a $100.00 but the ammo is already marked up to cover shipping. cheaper than dirt does have somegood prices at times on some of the clearance items. but they can't beat sportsmansguide. after you spend a few bucks at the guide they will start sending you discount coupons.

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
ORIGINAL: gene62 I have been in cheaper than dirts store...THEY ARE NOT CHEEPER THAN DIRT! For bird huntin' ammo, I go to Dick's Sporting Goods and stock up whether it is a sale or not because it is cheap enough. For deer and turkey ammo, a local gun shop has a wide array of ammo and has just about everthing if everything is in stock. He is higher than what you find online but what I would save by buying it online I would have to pay in shipping plus the inconvenience of having it shipped to him anyway because he is the closest FFL it just isn't worth it for me. |
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
I goto either Dick's Sporting Goods, or a better store called Green Top, north of Richmond, VA. They have everything!
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
Dick's usually has deals on rimfire ammo.
I hand load all of my centerfire and shotgun ammo |
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
i buy all of my weatherby .300 mag. ammo from weatherby over the internet. i found buying ammo for this particular rifle from the manufacturer better, due to more consistent loading.

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
i haven't tried those yet....it's hard for me to change when weatherby garuntees (sp?) their consistent loads.

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
you can buy ammo from federal, winchestor, etc. for weatherby's....but i have only found "weatherby" ammo, weatherby being the brand and the caliber, on their web site....if this makes sense.
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
weatherby is not only a magnum caliber but a brand as well. when you have a weatherby rifle, you can't shoot the regular caliber rounds like winchestor .300...it has to be a weatherby .300 because weatherby is a larger round. other ammo manufacturers make rounds for the weatherby but i buy the brand to match the caliber for more consistency.....i hope this is clearer
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
only draw back to buying ammo from the manufacturer (weatherby) is the cost. it cost me approximately $2.25 a shot, which gets kinda expensive.
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
Cop, I have heard that Weatherby seats thier bullets deep and it gives them to much free bore. The bullet has to jump further before contacting the rifling. Have you heard this?
|
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
i'll have to check into it, i have never heard that. i have always shot weatherby because, to me, they seem the most consistent from one box to another.
|

ORIGINAL: CamoCop i'll have to check into it, i have never heard that. i have always shot weatherby because, to me, they seem the most consistent from one box to another. all you have to do to check the freebore is bolt 1 round into the chamber and extract it.. Take a look at the scratches on the copper bullet and you will see how far it is seating into the chamber.. All manufacturers seat the bullets back a bit so they fit in every gun... This is the big advantage to handloading.. The OAL (over all legnth) will be exactly the same and tailor made to the gun you are loading for... no more wobble before it hits the twist. |
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
I have the local sporting goods store order me a case every year or so for my .243...Able to get them to knock $1.50 a box off ordering this way...I shoot Federal Premium.

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
hey rebel, got a question for you. is the accuracy difference worth the extra money spent for reloading or buying custom reloads? i'm not a tournament shooter, just a deer hunter.

Cop, I reloaded for more than 40yrs and stillhave all the equipment plus over 25 sets of dies, butI quit 10yrs ago. I liked killing game witha round that I loaded, makes you feel good and I enjoyed reloading also. If your rifle is giving you tight groups@ 200yds with factory ammo and you can afford to buy them, why change? If you like reloading and test firing your rounds and spending time at the range, than it's worth it,go for it, but remember if you don't have all the proper equipment, you're pissing in the wind.:D |
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
lol, i hear ya. i wouls like to it...but i don't have the time right now. maybe in the future.

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
To expand on what Highpower said, if you don't really have the time right now and are occupided with other things on your mind, wait untill you can consentrate on reloading. Camo, you can't do things half-ass when you are reloading, you just can,t jam things together and get pissed when you make a mistake and no Quessing!

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
i'd like to experiment and try lighter projectiles. i love the ballistic tips, but i have been using 180 gr. the lightest load i have found for the wby .300 mag. is 150 gr.
i'm wondering about 130 gr.? would this be too light and cause inacuracy? i know my 180 gr. ballistic tips are firing at approximately 3400-3600 fps. i'd like to lighten the projectile to possibly make it shoot flatter. keep in mind i hunt florida...it's rare to shoot a deer over 160 pounds. |

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
my overall goal is to gain more yardage out of my rifle with less drop. i know you can sight in for ungodly ranges BUT i don't want to screw up my 100 yard range aswell. i know you can't have the best of both worlds...but i would like to find a better happy medium than what i have now.
i'm not a ballistic expert but common sense tells me that the lighter the projectile the faster/flatter it will shoot. however, by lightening up the projectile and making it faster/flatter...how much will this effect the "drop" of the projectile. overall goal: other than buying a range finding scope...i'm trying to take some guess work out of long shots. does this make sense to you? |

Cop,I have posted this picture many times to prove a point! I took these two within 3 hrs with .270 130gr NP... InRifle, CO in 1994. I have also taken many deer in FL with it. ![]() |
RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
rebel, i know "other" rifles are out there that will do the job with smaller calibers. what i'm saying is, i don't own a .270...i own a .300 and i do not want to get rid of it and i can't afford another rifle right now. what i want to do is improve my .300 set up to where it does not have as much of the "rainbow" effect.

RE: WHERE DOES EVERYONE BUY THEIR AMMO?
Hre's the moose I took in 1995 with 6.5mmSwede and 156gr Norma ammo. Theseare the guide and a helper.

Start a newpost and type in:To mossyOak or BigCountry. They will be more than glad to help you! |

My Bad Cop, did'nt mean to put your Rifle down partner! I understand one has to use what they have, I justconsider a .300 Mag as a large animal round. Gosh, I know it will put down FL deer with your eyes closed.:D:D:D:D |
