which caliber?
 

First off let me say thank you to hunting.net for having me. My quesiton is i would like a predator, ground hog and deer rifle to use in pa. No real long shoots past 300. I am thinking of a 257 weatherby but what is everyone elses ideas. I currently own a ruger 270 and a sako 7mm

is there something wrong with your .270? thats all you need IMO. if your looking to buy a new rifle then there are many to chose from. i have to disagree with the choice of a weatherby though. the list goes on and on on the calibers to chose from and you will hear them all on here i'm sure. for what you will be shooting my preference would be a Rem. 6mm or Win. .243

You are already well armed for deer hunting. However if you want a combo Varmit/Deer then the 25-06 would serve you well. You could also keep your deer rifles and add a 223 to your arsonel for varmits. Low recoil and very cheap to shoot.

When it comes to availability...the .243 would get my pick any day. Many other calibers are just as well suited. But the .243 will fill you needs perfectly and is common enough to have good selection at good prices.

Since you already have some good deer guns I'd look at the 223, 22-250, or 243. The 243 could serve dual purpose, as well as the other 2 I mentioned,but I'd stay away from shooting big game with a .22 caliber centerfire if at all possible.

Have to agree with the 25-06 or 243 ideas. I have used both for deer and groundhogs. My favorite being the 243. With a 75 grain Hornady V-Max it does nasty thing to a chuck. Stuff a 95 grain Nolser Partition in it and it becomes a very good deer cartridge.

Course, being a gun nut....I would opt for adding the .223 and a .243 to my arsenal.

Great choices above. I'm a 6.5/.264 fan and it is also and excellent multi-tasker. Lot's of choices to choose from, especially if you reload; 6.5Grendel, 6.5-284(horndady is now making brass), .260Remington, 6.5X55 swede, .264mag, etc.. etc..

You already have two rifles that are more than capeable of killing any deer to distances well beyond your 300 yards so why not get a dedicated varmint rifle? You don't need another "do it all" rifle.

My vote would be a .223 or 22-250.

With the guns you already have, BB has the best idea, .223 or .22-250.
