.44 mag?
I am looking at purchasing a revolver either a taurus or s & w I want it to shoot for fun but also if I ever want to carry a side arm I want something big enough to handle the job. I understand you can shoot .44 specials for lighter recoil when at the range. How is the .44 mag to shoot? I have shot a .357 and didn't think it was bad at all. Thanks? Also who make ammo for the .44 special?

RE: .44 mag?
Forget the Taurus, there ok for the money but you'll be better off with the S/W or Ruger super redhawk. The .44 is not that bad to shoot. You can find .44 specal ammo just about anywere. How big is the job you need to handle?

RE: .44 mag?
You owe it to yourself, look at the Ruger! You won't look any further!
|
RE: .44 mag?
Thanks, actually havn't looked at the rugers. I guess that is what I will be looking at. Oh man, caliber choices now what do you think, .454 Casull, .44mag, .357? I really like the looks of those rugers

RE: .44 mag?
Mossy, go 7 1/2". Does everything the 9 1/2 does except make you regret getting such a long barrel!

Also who make ammo for the .44 special? The Rugers are beefy and accurate. But they are TOO big and ponderous for meif I have to climb any mountains at high altitude. An advantage the Taurus Raging Bull type revolvers have is their muzzle compensator and shock-absorbing grips-these features make a .454 feel like a .44 Magnum in other revolvers-pleasant to shoot! In addition, you can shoot all .45 Colt ammo in a .454, just as you can shoot .44 Special ammo in a .44 Mag. Let me state that the .44 Magnum using full-power 240 grain or heavier bullet ammo has about TWICE the recoil of a .357 Magnum! However, in a Ruger Redhawk, there's so much bulk and weight the recoil of the .44 Mag. is tamed considerably. So if you don't mind dragging that big chunk of steel around in the woods, it is a good choice! |
RE: .44 mag?
I looked at all three. I liked the ruger, and the taurus the best. However the saleman said there is no comparison the S&W is steps above the rest. I am not sure I agree. I want to buy the biggest I can handle. I want to shoot for fun too so I was thinking the .454 Casull is a bit much. That is why I was leaning the .44. I like shooting the .357 however for bear control I feel it is a tad light.

RE: .44 mag?
The .44 isnt bad to shoot at all, I have had my wife out on the range withthe .44and she does fine with it. It can get expensive to shoot depending on how much time your spending at the range. I own the S&W 629 Classic, its a sweet gun, I have shot the Ruger and thats a good gun as well. The reason I went with the S&W was I tripped on a deal to good to pass up in my .44 shopping. I was goingto purchase the Super Redhawk before I found the S&W.
I was originally worried about the .44 recoil toobut once I shot it realized it wasnt bad, big handguns are addictive....I'm looking at a S&W .500 now, that should be a handful. |

RE: .44 mag?
drh,
Am i mistaken or did you say you might want to use it for a side arm? 454 Casull? 44 mag with 7 1/2 or 9 1/2 barrel? These sound a bit large for that don't they. |

RE: .44 mag?
I've concealed my BFR 45/70 with a 10" barrel.Drh1175 , I'm confused, are we looking for a plinker, something for hunting, or a concealed carry?
|
RE: .44 mag?
Oh, well maybe drh meant while hunting too. I just took it as conceal.
I shouldn't assume that. Would be a heck of a conceal carry weapon though. |
RE: .44 mag?
However the saleman said there is no comparison the S&W is steps above the rest. I am not sure I agree. Keep in mind that S&W's have "hammer forged" frames and Rugersare a "casting", so Ruger HAS to be bigger and heavier to get the same strength of hammer forgeing. Make mine a S&W please......... RE: .44 mag?
wel,
For whats its worth i have had 2 ruger super blackhawks in 44 mag.I sold my 5-1/2 barrel and now have a 7-1/2 and love it.It can shoot better than I can.Plus it makes me feel like a cowboy when its on my hip in the mountains! One other thing don't take any gun "salesmen" at what they say. For the most part The gunstore people I have dealt with are honest but I have also found that alot of guys working in a gunstore have a tendency to make things up when they dont know any facts. I tore a saleman apart at a gander mountain for telling the person looking that the glock is a piece of you know what. He couldnt even tell me about the finish -tenifer, the barrel-polygonal or the action "safe action". Remember opinions vary, just dont make stuff up! Nathan |

RE: .44 mag?
I agree with not getting the Taurus. I had one and the trigger was very very sloppy shooting double action. Single action shooting was not that bad. If you want a quality gun, go with the Ruger or S&W.
