Re-Chambering a rifle ??
 

I have an old Remington Mauser action 30-06 that is the most solid gun I have ever seen. I have a few 30-06's and wanted to know if it is possible to have this gun re-chambered in a .325 WSM or a 300 Mag? Just curious how much something like that would cost. I just refinished the stock and it came out excellent.. The gun is a WW 2 sporter that was used as a sniper rifle..

I am not familiar with modifying mauser actions but I can tell you that both the wsm case and any of the 300mag cases that I know of have larger rim diameters than the 30-06.As such some bolt face work would have to be done.As well the .325 is a larger bore diameter so you would either need to rebarrel or rebore the existing barrel.Lastly the larger case diameterscouldcause feeding problems.

Not a big deal to turn to 30/06 into a .300 Win Mag. The bolt face and extractor need to be modified a little, but this is a pretty easy deal for an experienced riflesmith. There is also a little work to do with the follower and the feed rails of the action.

I would not do any of the WSM calibers. Not that it couldn't be done, but it is so involved that you would be better off just buying a factory WSM rifle.

If it were me, I would consider converting the 30/06 to a 30/06 Ackley Improved. You can make 3,000 fps with 180 grain bullets and a quality 24" barrel - with less recoil and better brass life than the .300 Win Mag. Just make sure you find a gunsmith who understands how the Ackley Improved's headspace. If your existing barrel is a 24" or longer tube and in good condition, you could just set it back and rechamber it to the 30/06 Ackley. Something to consider.

First off i never have heard of a Remington Mauser rifle. Nothing wrong with the 30-06 cartridge,is there. It will kill anything running around in NY and all the other states.Could you post a picture of it for identification purposes and then we could go from there? vangunsmith

Me neither. Might be a Remington made 1903A3? Might also be a M1917, or maybe a Remington Model 30. If that old, i'd not change it, just buy a modern rifle instead of buggering up a classic.

Yes under the barrel is says remington 1903.. how did you guys know? is this gun worth anything? It is very solid.

well you said it was a Mauser action, so we just assumed you meant Mauser style action which the 1903 Springfield is. Many were sporterized after the war, to get rid of the bulky stocks.......I am not an expert on them, just kinda process of elimination. I personally wouldnt chop it up.

As far as it being worth anything....You'd probably have to look at the serial number.....
Rem started they're original 1903 at3,000,000 so as not to confuse with Springfield Army....

I would guess that the .303 British (A Prototype) that RemingtonArmsmade in the Model 1903-type for Great Britain, (after war was declared) WOULD BE WORTH QUITE A BIT OF MONEY......:D
The initial production of the Rem Model 1903's are identical to the 1903 made by Springfield Army......Very well made as good as me custom built rifles.....Probably Worth Quite A Bit......
Than as the war went on Rem had to cut minor corners to keep up with demands for production.....
During the War, TWO, 1903A3's (modified 1903)Models were made by 2 different Companies...Smith-Corona (the Type Writing Company) and Remington...... I think Smith Corona had their name stamped on the barrel.
