Savage Model 99
I found a Savage 99 in a gun shop this last week and need a little info on it. It is in 250 caliber and is in very good condition. It has a color case hardened lever with I don't recall the older ones having. Does anyone know when they last chambered this rifle in 250-3000? I think it was a 99 "A" but I can't recall for sure. I ask them to hold it for me for a week and they agreed as I have bought quite a few guns from them in the past.

James, if you manage to get the serial number off of it you can go to http://www.savage99.com/and you can get a ballpark figure of date of manufacture. I have been looking for a 99 in 250 Savage and one in 358 Win.

RE: Savage Model 99
Thank you gentlemen. I have had a couple of these rifles. One in 243 and one in 303 Savage. This one is in very good shape. I didn't notice what the barrel length was. I think I will jump on this one as you don't see many around in 250 Savage. One of my favorite deer rifle calibers. We have one in the 700 Classic.

I got hooked on them when I had to do some minor repairs on my neighbor's 99E in 308Win. He let me shoot it at the range and I just loved it. Then I walked into the gunshop one day and saw one just like it. Metal was in great shape but the stock was a little worn. Took it home, refinished the stock, took some wood out of the forearm where it was binding, polished the trigger and sear and it shoots just as good as my neighbor's.

Fellas I've got a 250 savage myself and was just curious about what the 3000 means.

RE: Savage Model 99
When it was introduced, it fired an 87 grain bullet at 3000 fps. Thus the 250-3000. In those days the name stood for something. Like the 45-70 was 45 caliber loaded with 70 grains of Black Powder. In the case of the 250, the 3000 was the velocity. Quite a acomplishment back the and was the firdt cartridge to break the 3000 ft mark.

I may have paid more then its worth but I really like it. If you like it, then it was worth what you paid for it. I look at them as an investment. They shoot well, are classy, and they aren't made anymore. I have noticed that values and prices really vary depending on model and cartridge. Some of the rarer ones are listed up in the thousands of dollars. I don't think I could spend that much since I would be itching to shoot it too bad. |
RE: Savage Model 99
I have not picked it up yet but he is asking 400 for it. A friend of mine who collects guns told me to jump on it as he has seen the 250's go for 900- 1000. He thinks I would not have any problem getting more than that for it if I decide I don't want it. Its almost like a new gun condition wise. I know the guy who brought it in. We went to high school together. Thats probably a premium price but I have been looking for one for some time now.

Never really knew what I had until now. Thanks for the info. I got it for a birthday present when I was 10 and that is what my wife deer hunts with now.

RE: Savage Model 99
My wife hunts deer with the 250 Savage in the 700 Classic. They are a fine deer rifle with almost no recoil but yet pretty effective.

RE: Savage Model 99
hows the ammo. suppy on that round ?

RE: Savage Model 99
Most bigger sporting goods stores carry 250 ammo. You won't find it at Walmart however. I reload for mine anyway.

RE: Savage Model 99
Now James ,You know you should leave that one alone I am sure you already have enough guns.[8D]J/K Sounds like a good deal jump on it.

RE: Savage Model 99
I always have enough guns. Sometimes however I don't have all the RIGHT guns.:D. I called the guy yesterday and told him I wanted it for sure. I will pick it up next week.:)

RE: Savage Model 99
I have a Savage 99 chambered for 300 Savage. I absolutely love the gun. I have only killed 1 deer with it, but I plan on shooting at least 1 or 2 does with it in the extended doe season in January. It has a crappy 4x32 Bushnell scope on it, I will probably swap a different scope on it before January and I might just load up some 125gr Nosler BTs for it....
If anyone could post up some pics of their 99s with scopes mounted it would be appreciated, I don't like how mine is setup and would like to get some other ideas on new mounts. Gotta love the old iron! :D |
RE: Savage Model 99
I picked the 99 up today and checked the serial number. It says 1951 or later. I picked up one box of factory 100 grainers to try it out.:D:D
