This christmas I am going to be asking for a shotgun. The problem is I dont know what kind to get. Really the only things I would do with it is hunt turkeys, ducks phesants etc., and small game. What type do you recommend for all these types of hunting? 12ga? 16? 20? Any particualr brands that specialize in shotgun manufacturing? I dont even know becuase I know nothing about shotguns at this point, I was hoping someone would help me out. Thanks

can't go wrong with a good ol' remington 870

Yea I was looking at those actually. My buddy has a 20ga model of it. What would you recommend towards the gauge though?

If turkey, duck & pheasant are the main prey I'd go
with the 12ga. Myself, I like an auto-loader for this
type hunting. As for specific makes/models, the best
thing to do is handle as many as possible. Go to a shop
or gun show with alot of options. Fit and feel mean alot.
Costs can go from a couple hundred to a thousand or more
so there's alot to choose from. And if your like most this
will not be your last shotgun purchase so there's really no
wrong answer.

Remington all the way definetly 12ga tho its a fair bit cheaper then 20 and quite a bit cheaper then 16(good luck finding much for loads for a 16 anyway) but the 870 is probably the best pump ever made or maybe tied compared to the winchester12 but i would go with a 870 or a 1187 if you want an auto.

1. Definately 12 if those are going to be your main quarry (sp?)
2. Definately a semi-auto (or auto-loader) because turkey loads are pretty stout and duck loads aren't bad either.

The 870 is a fine gun, but I really don't see the point of getting a pump for a gun to be used with heavy loads! They're argueble the worst when it comes to recoil. Do your parents know much about guns? Just tell you you'd like a 12guage auto. If not, visit here: http://www.shotgunworld.com/new.html Don't be scared of the cheaper guns from huglu/spartan/charles daily/verona etc. Often their designs are EXACT copies of the more expensive ones...and make fine guns. You can also read for weeks at that forum and learn more about shotguns than any one person deserves to know without decades of trail-and-error.

If they want to spend the money on a decent auto, then go that route, but if not i would also reccomend the 870. maybe in synthetic as it is super durable, but don't overlook the wingmaster in a nice wood stock.

A Remington 870 12 gauge is exactly what I'd recommend.

I would reccomend the following:
12 ga
3 in Mag
Interchageable choke system
Synthetic Stock

Here is why....You could hunt just about anything with that setup from squirell to deer. And all the birds in between. If you want to hunt turkey, get yourself a turkey choke too. I just bought a mossberg 500 12 ga interchangeable choke, 3 in mag, ported 26 in barell shadow grass finish, $299.00. If you get the 3 in, you can shoot smaller like 2 1/2 and interchangeable chokes, really broadens your spectrum on what to hunt. Hope this helps. Most people like the remingtons though, I have an 11-87 cant complain about that either, but if you are looking for cheap, dont rule out the mossberg, it may not be fancy, but remember...you pay for fancy.
