I have gone back to my 30/30 this year and have it sighted in zero at 125 yards. I shoot silluettes at 50-75-125 without making any adjustments as far as aim points. My son killed a deer this past weekend with it at 65 yards, and it did the trick perfectly.

I have shot a few deer at 200 yards with the 30-30. However 150 yards is more like its effective range. I sight mine in about 1 inch high at 100 yards.

Assuming you are using a scope I would sight a 30-30 in to impact 3" high at 100 yards with 170 and 150 grain bullets.
This will allow you to hold center of the vitals on a deer out to 200 yards with no compensation. At 200 yards you will be right at the 1000 foot pound mark that many consider the required energy for deer sized animals.
This is assuming that you rifle is fairly accurate and that you can shoot accurately enough.

Thats the greatest thing about the 30-30 is you practice how you want it and feel comfortable, keeping in mind your hunting conditions. I have mine set dead center at 100 yards open sights because that will be the longest shot I ever take where I hunt and any further than that, I feel increases the risk ofjust wounding the deer. It still shoots dead on at any distance shorter too. Thereare more reasons that more deer have been killed with a 30-30 than just because it been around longer than any other gun. Its because it has withstood the tests of time.

The ammo manufacturere will have ballistics charts which will tell you how the bullet flies. Like someone said, about 2-3 inches high at 100 will give you point blank out to about 200, and the bullet will probably still have enough power for a good kill. You should actually shoot at 50, 100, 150, 200 to see if you can be accurate and if the bullet is indeed acting like the charts say.
You should think hard about shooting further than that, in my opinion, with a 30-30. Depends on your particular situation and skill

The question to ask yourself is "what is the longest distance I plan on taking a shot from where I'll be hunting?" For those of us thathunt in the mountains of NC, it is pretty rare we can find a field that allows us to take a clean shot over 200 yards. Average shot distance for me is 75-150 yards. I site in at 100 yards each year...last few deer were killed withmy Marlin 30-30 and each time bullet entry was right on target. However, if you plan on shooting distances over 150 or 180 yards, you may want to re-evaluate caliber selection (but I love my 30-30).
Be safe,and happy hunting.
